Conterie

I stayed at this hotel on Murano because central Venice was fully booked out due to an event. There were several vaparetto stops nearby, so it was easy to get backwards and forwards to central Venice. I liked the period feel of the hotel, and it certainly felt Italian with the decor, light fittings, etc. The open-air breakfast terrace was a real highlight. Breakfast itself was typical average contiental with enough choices. I had a twin room, which was large and clean, and the bathroom was also spacious with a good hot shower. My only issue was our arrival. Due to flights, we arrived at 9.45 pm. The hotel door was open, but there was no visible reception or receptionist. We walked around and upstairs and down, but couldn't find anyone. We pressed the front door buzzer several times but nobody came. On the front door was a sign to say "phone this number if you arrive in the evening", however my phone does not work in Italy, as I am not from that country. To have this as a solution obviously depends on tourists' phone packages working. My sister's phone did work, but still nobody answered the calls. We were starting to panic, as Murano seemed otherwise completely shut up for the night. As we were about to give up, the receptionist finally turned up and unlocked a room which proved to be reception. We were very relieved and said we were worried that we nearly had to sleep on the street, but he was completely impassive, unmoved, and unapologetic. Unfortunately, this really did affect my stay, and I couldn't really get over such a terrible check-in. Also, there was no food available locally or in the hotel at 9.45pm, so we went to bed without any food. If it weren't for the check-in, I would stay again, as it's an economical choice, but I am afraid I will noy be doing so now.

Run by 2 dictators. Horrible place! Pillows are hard cushions, breakfast was terrible. Never again! Shabby furniture.
