Hotel Commercio e Pellegrino

We were expected to arrive in Venice a little after midnight. I called to confirm that we could get in at that hour. We were told no problem. We arrived when I told them we would. The doors were locked, we rang the bell, no one showed up, called, it went to voice mail. We finally decided to try to find another hotel open at that hour, and a man called out as we were walking away. I didn’t appreciate the stress of thinking we had no where to go at midnight. The elevator was broken so we lugged our suitcases up four flights of stairs. We opted out of the $12 breakfast. Upon checkout we told the front desk we didn’t have breakfast and paid and got a receipt. When notice of the cc charge came through they did charge for breakfast to the tune of 50 addl euros. I feel ripped off.

Our first night in this hotel was just “OK”; breakfast pretty disappointing compared to other European breakfasts we’ve had. But the second day, as we were getting ready to go out to dinner the power went out - and the water & toilet stopped working. We thought no big deal, it’ll be back. Back from dinner - entire hotel dark; no power or water. Three hours later the fire department shows up and restores power (apparently there was a fire alarm that went off & killed the power which we did not hear on the 3rd floor).  That might have been it, but that night no one in hotel had A/C or hot water. They tried to explain it away, but guests compare notes. The scary part was that when I tried to go out running at 6:00 in the morning I couldn’t get out. Had to track down someone from the kitchen who went hunting for a key to let me out! So here we are, the day before a fire alarm goes off and that night they lock everyone in with a key needed to get out.

Superb location next to the lagoon and downtown. The rooms are very pretty! The breakfast is very average! Not enough choices, I do not recommend it given the price!
