I have stayed at Wakkanai twice so far, but this is my first stay at Safir Hotel Wakkanai. I remember when it was built in the 1990s, it was an ANA hotel. It is probably the largest hotel in Wakkanai, and it is clearly visible from Wakkanai Park and from the boat going to Rebun and Rishiri. The location is good, and Wakkanai Station and the North Breakwater Dome can be reached in 3 minutes on foot, and the terminal of the ship to Rebun and Rishiri can be reached in less than 10 minutes. A bus to the airport will pick you up at your doorstep. It is about 30 years old so the exterior is getting a little less pretty, but I think the inside of the hotel is a good hotel with a sense of luxury. The rooms were spacious and relaxing, and the food was gorgeous and delicious. Breakfast is served from 5am, in conjunction with the departure of the boat to Rebun and Rishiri. It is one of the hotels I want to use again.

We stayed at Surfeel Hotel Wakkanai twice for one night each, as a base for visiting Rishiri and Rebun Islands. The hotel’s location is excellent—very close to the ferry terminal and Wakkanai Station, and the famous Wakkanai North Breakwater Dome is just a 2–3 minute walk away. Although the hotel is a bit older, it is well maintained, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. The front desk staff were all very nice, especially Ms. Jessica from Malaysia. She is extremely friendly, polite, and speaks Cantonese and English, which was a great help for us since we don’t speak Japanese. We were lucky that she assisted us for both check-ins. If we have the chance to visit Wakkanai again, we will definitely stay at Surfeel Hotel Wakkanai.

Probably the northernmost hotel in Japan – right by the harbor, although there isn’t much to see around. The place is definitely old, but it’s been kept in surprisingly good shape. The TV feels like one of the very first flat screens, and the bathroom is still the old “unit bath” style. In the hotel, everything is clinically clean and you will find no spot. What really stood out were the beds – super comfortable and I slept really well. Breakfast was a mixed bag: the Western breakfast was pretty disappointing and very limited, but the Japanese option looked much better. At ¥35,100 per night including breakfast, it feels quite pricey for the area. It’s a quiet and clean hotel – recommended for one night, but not more. One more thing: if you have a choice to eat somewhere outside, I would recommend to do so
