Casterbridge

This is a traditional Japanese ryokan, and quite old. Our room had a small outdoor onsen, which was lovely, but no view of the surrounding countryside. The staff seemed quite put out at our arriving at 12 noon, before our room was ready. Usually this is not a problem as you can just leave your bags and go off until 3pm, but this seemed to upset them a bit.. Although we had filled in a form prior to our trip explaining my allergy to seafood they found this extremely problematic. We had booked the evening meal, but they were unable to provide this, so we were sent by coach with some other guests to a nearby hotel where there was an extensive buffet catering to all tastes, and unlimited drinks as well, so that was great! The hotel provides a shuttle bus to the Open Air Museum, which we really enjoyed, It is convenient for buses to the Ropeway, and you can walk to a beautiful garden and a waterfall which is hard to find but worth the effort. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean, and it was great to have the private onsen.

I was slightly apprehensive as reviews seemed extremely mixed and now I’be been I think I can see why. This is a unique and magical place.
