We stayed for 1 night, 2 adults and 2 girls in this ryokan. Typical and very beautiful structure, spacious rooms for 4 people, clean with all the necessities (toothbrush, toothpaste, slippers, hairdryer, refrigerator, safe). The structure is a bit dated but clean. Very kind and professional staff, they speak English well. Comfortable futon, we slept very well. Delicious dinner and truly abundant. The breakfast was very abundant, but I honestly had a hard time eating; let's say it is obviously not made for us Westerners and should be taken as it is. Booked a private onsen for 30 minutes (it can only be done on-site upon arrival), super relaxing. Then there is a private onsen available if you find it free, and 2 separate onsens for men and women. The price is a bit high, but more or less the prices of ryokans (if dinner and breakfast are included) in Hakone are all the same. Very convenient, 5 minutes on foot from Hakone Yumoto station. Recommended.

Hotel well located in relation to the Hakone station, convenient for getting there with light luggage (the others are sent directly from Tokyo, as is customary in Japan). Pretty traditional building, also regarding the room setup, somewhat outdated, unfortunately a bit noisy due to poor sound insulation. Be careful of the stairs, particularly steep and dangerous. It is also worth noting the absence of chairs, and it is only possible to sit on the floor. For those who can only sleep in complete darkness, it should be noted that the blinds are not at all blackout and it is light by 6:00 AM in May. Moreover, if you request to be woken up at 8:00 AM, someone arrives as early as 7:30 AM and knocks continuously on the door. Special mention for the excellent quality of the meals, traditional Japanese, which are also plentiful. By the way, Hakone is certainly not worth a detour on a first trip to Japan.

If you're looking for shiny new facilities, have mobility issues, or any kind of food restrictions, this place is not a good choice for you. It's a bit worn around the edges, there are a ton of short flights of stairs, and yes, you will be eating and sleeping on the floor (with perfectly comfortable futons and cushions). However, we found it to be charming, comfortable, and clean. We had a pretty view of the courtyard with a bit of the mountains over the roof. We didn't have an in-room onsen; we liked the shared ones just fine. (One has an outdoor section open to the sky, one has a little waterfall.) For the most part, we even had the shared onsen to ourselves. Location is an easy walk from the train station. It's also a short walk to a very pretty waterfall. The food is exquisite, if you're an adventurous eater. Yes, it will involve a ton of raw seafood, as well as textures Western palates aren't as accustomed to. But each tiny dish is perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. There were a couple we didn't care for, but there was more than enough food that we could leave the few bites here and there we didn't want without going hungry. We had a lovely time.
