Good Ryokan experience. Spacious room with futon. The Onsen is very nice. Close to the Gardens and lots of restaurants around. 15 minutes from the station by taxi if no traffic like early in the morning. Very welcoming and very helpful staff.

I’ve stayed at any number of ryokan over the 20 plus years I’ve been living in Japan and I think Gion Shinmonso needs to up its game more. They were meticulous about enforcing check-in/check-out times, filling out forms, copying passports, and inquiring about dinner and breakfast times. However, when it came time to provide the kinds of services ryokan are noted for (namely hospitality), they failed. We had ordered a shabu-shabu dinner and instead we were served the kaiseki meal ... which was not to our liking. It was too late to make changes at that point since dinner was already being served. I thought this was a huge oversight. In addition, I felt that the staff could have extended itself more and made us feel more like guests ... my good mornings and other greetings (in Japanese) were often ignored. I know that’s a small thing, but it detracted from my experience at Gion Shinmonso. I will not return here nor will I recommend this establishment.

We spent one night in this ryokan while in Kyoto for a week. It was in a really nice location and we purchased a Beef Sukiyaki and sake set. Check-in was easy. We made a booking and one of the staff members came to our room and prepared our food for us in the room. He was really friendly. When that was done they pushed the table over and made our beds for us. The mattresses weren't all that comfortable but it is what one expects from a Ryokan, you are sleeping on futon covered tatami mats There was also a restaurant next door with people who came in and out at all times of night talking quite loudly that kept us up a bit. Also to note, we were in a smoking room even though we dont smoke and other than in the hallways, the rooms themselves dont actually smell of smoke so no need to be worried. While we make these observations of the living area it was an experience I would definitely recommend. The pros definitely outweigh the cons and Gion Shinmonso.
