The two stars are for the couple. Lovely, kind people. We found the accommodation to be clean (as compared to older reviews!). So I think they made improvements. We came for the kitties but only saw them briefly. :( If that is an issue for you, don't worry, you hardly see them. The frustrating thing was the curfew of 11pm!! It was annoying. And also you have to leave your keys etc. So you can't come and go as you please. It's really more like a hostel than a traditional Japanese style accommodation (no yukata, etc.) We had the corner room, Heian, it was spacious and the garden view was nice. A fresh breeze. But you can't spend time in the garden. No apparent seating area. Maybe just for the view?? It's a great place if you understand the limitations. They should be more clear about he house rules on their advertisement. If we had known about the curfew we wouldn't have booked here. If you don't mind early nights, it should suit you fine.

Guest House Yamato had everything we needed. You are living with a lovely couple who were very attentive and helpful. We had a triple room with a view out to a peaceful garden. We felt a little intrusive using the family kitchen and lounge - although this was offered. Once there, the location is superb, it is a bit far to walk from the main railway - we used a taxi to arrive and the bus to leave which was very simple. Our only suggestion would be a common lounge and small kitchen.

This is a very conveniently located, low-budget guest house run by a Japanese couple with very limited English. Communication is achieved through pre-written cards with English phrases on them, which manages check-in but struggles with more complex queries (like enquiring of the nearest laundrette). Hosts were pleasant and provided hot tea each evening, there was also a fridge for guest use. 2 cats present at property weren't a problem for me but might be for other travellers. Rooms are small which is to be expected for the price. Bed very hard with one tiny bean filled pillow, little larger than a cushion meant I had to sleep on a folded up cardigan instead. Biggest issue was cleanliness - room was not cleaned in the 6 days I was there, nor had it been cleaned before I arrived - bedding dirty and I got numerous bed bug bites as a result. Communal toilets also had urine stains behind seats and dirty sinks.
