Hotel Mielparque Sendai

Stayed in a non-smoking twin room two nights in April with my older mother. 3 minutes walk from a train station. Signage in English of the actual hotel is tiny though so make sure you read your map well! Very friendly, helpful staff. Super clean. Fast lifts, lovely lobby to wait in. Ate at the restaurant which was very affordable and pretty good food. The twin room was huge, spacious even with a sofa, table and chair. Very comfortable beds though pillows were slightly hard - though that seems to be Japan. We had a view over Sendai and to the snow capped mountains. I would stay here again. Though it is not in the main city area. It is quite and the nearby park has the most beautiful cherries trees which were in bloom.

I arrived at the Hotel Mielparque around 7:00 pm after a long bus ride across the country. The hotel lobby looked very nice, as did the outside of the hotel. However, the desk clerk immediately asked me for my passport. As a legal and long term resident of Japan I do not need to carry a passport. When I informed him that I was a resident of Japan he then asked for identification which I provided. I refused to allow him to copy my card and he told me that he had to. I asked to speak with a manager, but he refused. I showed him a copy of the law which I carry for these situations and he tried to show me where the law said I had to allow a copy of my card. We seemed to be at an impasse until another staff member came by and whispered in his ear. I have no idea what was said, but I was allowed to get my room key and go to my room. When I got to my room, I am afraid that I wasn't very impressed. The room was small, even by Japan standards. There was dust on the carpet around the door stopper. The television did not receive all of the free channels on the Broadcast Satelitte Band either. The room was fine apart from these problems. The bed was comfortable and the room quiet. In the morning I used the public bath and apart from a slight blip finding the bath, I did enjoy it. It was on a high floor and it was nice to be able to look out on the city while in the bath. Unfortunately I found that the hotel was not worth the cost nor the hassle of dealing with unknowledgeable staff members. For a person not used to staying in Japanese hotels, there was very little in the way of English available in the rooms or signs in the hotel. The hotel I checked into the next day was perfect. The desk clerk didn't even ask me for identification after I told him I was a resident of Japan.

A good hotel with good Japanese service. Food okay and room clean, if a little 70s in style. They could make much more of the space on offer in the hotel. Desk staff helpful and delifhtedvto help get you to the right places as taxi drivers rarely speak English and describing places can be quite difficult for us brits who are no good at languages.
