Kanbayashi Hotel Senjukaku

Had a great overnight stay here in a Japanese style room with tatami mats. First though, this is a hotel rather than a ryoken, and presents as a hotel. But its still a great experience to get out of the city. The mats were more comfortable than I expected. They are on the firmer side, but basically are like firm mattresses. We slept well. The balcony had a nice view over pines and hills. You get the Yukatas to wear around the hotel, to dinner (if you like) and in the garden. And talking of dinner, its a multi-course extravaganza of exceptional food. Absolutely brilliant. There is a communal onsen (gender segregated and no clothing allowed). If that doesn't sound appealing to you, there are two private onsen rooms which each have an indoor and outdoor pool that you can book for 45 minutes for 2,000 yen. They only allow you to reserve on arrival, and we did so - most slots that afternoon/evening were still available at 1530 on check in. A nice peaceful location, they run shuttle buses to and from Yudanaka station (less than 10 minute drive). Main thing that may need attention is the swimming pool area which is somewhat dated and the pool water a bit cooler than I'd like.

Absolutely incredible authentic experience. Traditional Japanese meals, bedding and bedding! The staff were very professional and helpful. They were accomodating for my food allergies of gluten free. At Rokumei we had the delightful Mar rue yama ( i think that is how it's spelled and i am so deeply sorry if it is not) He was friendly, attentive, went out of his way to check in on us the next day. Next level service, with those nice little touches that make the difference. We loved the public onsen, i mean we were in a hot tub and it was snowing. How cool is that! The products were amazing. Delicious food, so close to the Snow Monkeys. Near Enzo's cafe for delicious apple and custard pies and apple juice! My friend wants to come back for her honeymoon.

Stayed 2 nights and had an AMAZING experience. Dinner was a fantastic experience. We enjoyed embracing the Japanese culture while wearing the Yukata throughout! Onsens were a great time. Highly recommended!!! Would definitely go back!!!
