Atami Tamanoyu Hotel

One night stay on a company trip. The building and rooms are old and generally dim. The room is also built in the Showa era... The staff did not greet or bow even in the dining area or the hallway, and when I left the room before checking out, they glanced at me from the staff room in the hallway, and I felt a cold gaze that made me feel like I was still waiting to leave. The room was on the ocean side, facing the sea, and the view was good. The whole room was old...The refrigerator was also from the Showa era, and you had to pay for drinks. They had duct tape over the empty spaces to prevent drinks from being filled in, so you couldn't bring your own drinks in. You could only fit a few bottles in the gaps... The vending machines in the building only sold soft drinks, which may be unavoidable, but they were expensive and I didn't feel like buying anything, so I bought them at the convenience store next door. The abalone was delicious. The tuna sashimi was a bad color, so I thought it would be okay to eat it, but I managed to eat it. By the way, there was no explanation of the food or the banquet drinks. The hot spring is on the first basement floor and is called the "Undersea Bath", but it's dimly lit, there's a vinyl sheet-like thing on the ceiling, and there are a few goldfish in a tank... the view isn't great... The only thing is that the sauna was good, but the cold bath was too simple. The hot spring has good heat retention and is lukewarm, so you can take your time in it. The rooftop open-air bath is completely visible from the neighboring hotel, and the privacy screen is broken in places, so it's unsettling. The bathtub is made of plastic so if three people get in, you can't even stretch your legs, and the smell of plastic and chlorine makes it unbearable. I don't think I'd want to stay here again on my next trip to Atami, and I can't recommend it.

This was my first time staying here, but unfortunately I don't think I'll stay there again. Good points: - Facing the sea of Atami, the view is great, and the location is very good. - The food is relatively plentiful and of good quality. Bad points: - It can't be helped that the building is old, but the floor in the room was so soft (severely deteriorated) and the step between the toilet and the room was also tilted, so I actually got dizzy, felt sick, and vomited. People who are sensitive to things should avoid this. - The bath has the atmosphere of an undersea hot spring, but there are no tropical fish in the tank, and the water is murky and dirty, and you bathe while looking at the tank with no fish. It seems that the selling point is that it is drawn directly from the source, but it didn't feel like a good quality hot spring. There are good points, so I gave it 3 points, but the old facilities can't be helped, and the rest of the hotel is not good enough to ignore that, so unfortunately I don't think I'll stay there again. I really think they should rebuild it and aim to be a new inn while keeping the same hospitality.

Visited and stayed in this ryokan because of the fireworks in August 2017 - the hotel costs double compared to normal days. If not for the fantastic view from the balcony for the fireworks - this hotel would be a disappointment - very old ryokan and even the onsen is quite old looking. There is a fish tank inside the onsen and I feel sad for the fishes swimming inside- the tank looks as old as the ryokan. Dinner and breakfast was served in the room - the food is not the best compared to the other ryokans I have stayed in. However, this ryokan is convenient in terms of location - there is family mart and plenty of restaurants nearby - Denny's restaurant is just downstairs the hotel on the right hand side. Do visit the Atami rope way and there is apparently a sex museum at the top of the rope way and the castle is nearby too. Generally I find Atami a little too commercialized for my liking given the proximity to Tokyo and it gets a little too crowded. Do check out newer properties like hotel micuras and livemax if you plan to stay in Atami. They are also close to the sun beach.
