As per the majority of people I came to Phonsavan to see the Plain of Jars. I decided on the Auberge for my two night stay and was pleasantly surprised. It is run by Mr Soulivan, A Frenchman who’s father started the hotel. The hotel is situated on a hill and half of the rooms overlook the main town. The climate here is somewhat cooler to the rest of Laos, which is why you wont find air conditioning in the rooms. The rooms are basic but have a fireplace, balcony and a very comfortable bed. It was nice not having to sleep without air conditioning for once. The three main Plain of Jars sites are readily accessible by vehicle from the hotel. As mentioned Mr Soulivan is very hospitable towards his guests and it can feel more like a ‘home stay’ than a hotel stay.

Wonderful forest location above the town with marvellous views over the town and the hills beyond. Big log-cabin room but very old and basic although the whole place has begun an extensive renovation it seems. Excellent western-style breakfasts, fresh fruits, eggs, bread. Very friendly helpful staff. No evening restaurant service but perhaps that's because it's the quieter rainy season. A 30 minute pleasant walk to the town centre, 20 minutes to the nearest restaurant (Nom Neam) which serves delicious Laos foods e.g. papaya salads and seafood. Take a torch for this evening walk. Lots of dogs on site so it's not for non-dog people. No wifi or tv in the rooms. Wifi at the reception area.

We arrived at the Phouphadeng Hotel-Auberge de la Plains des Jarres after a long and grueling motorbike ride. The location is a bit tricky to find, but well worth it! They have sweet wooden chalets with comfortable beds and fireplaces (it was cold and rainy and very welcomed). The food in the restaurant was good, but a little pricier than if you made the decision to eat in the town. For us, well worth it! The owner is lovely and has 8 dogs for pets, so if you aren’t a dog person, it could be intimidating. The staff were wonderful and our stay was great. The breakfast was also amazing-best omelette in Laos! I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are staying in Phonsavan.
