the Poet Hotel Amsterdam

On the day of checking in (3/7/26), I had kept my passports and cash in a bag inside the safe my room. I had obviously changed the combination of the lock and had locked the safe. The following day (4/7/26), I did not open the safe at all as I was out the whole day. On the morning of 5/7/26, when I opened the safe I discovered that from my bag 300 USD and a 100 Euros were stolen. My Indian rupees were all jumbled but not stolen. I immediately complained to the front desk. Initially they said they would enquire and later they said that they have no unauthorised entry on their computer logs. They then asked me to file a police complaint which I did and the police came the same evening to take a statement from me. During that time the police also discovered that there was an unauthorised entry into my room where a staff entry card was used. This was apart from the cleaners entering the room which was standard. The manager refused to tell us who the person who entered the room was and additionally the CCTV cameras in the corridor where my room was were not working. The manager claimed that they didn't know who entered. In effect I lost a lot of cash and the whole experience left us all very disgusted with the hotel. We had booked three rooms for 3 nights and everything the hotel front desk did seemed like a cover up job after the theft.

First, the positives: the location is great, in a beautiful neighborhood just steps from several major museums. The staff was very nice, and the breakfast was pretty good. The lobby was a comfortable place to hang out. The not-so-positives: maybe there is a thin line between shabby-chic and shabby, but the chair and stool in the room, the only places to sit other than the bed, were old and decrepit. The room had one small single-speed fan that barely moved air, which became a big issue when it got warm outside in late June and there was no breeze. The one window in the room was largely blocked by the homemade headboard, and we were barely able to sleep for several nights. The shower was by far the smallest I have ever used, and they mounted the folding shower door in such a way that made it difficult to turn on the water before entering. So, this hotel is a modest priced option in a great location, but at least some of the rooms are not particularly comfortable.

This was a great hotel. Very friendly and helpful staff. I would definitely stay here again.
