Kingsgate Hotel Hamilton

We would agree with two regular themes mentioned in reviews - the hotel is a little tired and the location out of town is such that there is nothing really in the way of facilities like restaurants and bars within a reasonable walking distance. Whilst we there the hotel also had a rather ghostly feel, being very quiet. However, despite all these comments it was actually quite a good stay here. The room was a good size, car parking wasn't a problem but most of all the staff were excellent and the restaurant food was surprisingly good. The ghostly feel seems to be a result of its primary function as a conference centre and we must have been between conferences - we were told it was fully-booked the following week. The limitations didn't prove to much of a problem for us in the end, so we were quite happy with our stay here, but you need to be aware of them when considering a stay.

A nice budget hotel. Standard rooms have King and Queen size beds. Clean and reasonably quiet at night. Set in grounds near to park and racecourse. Not much choice for eateries locally in walking disrance so dined in restaurant which was good value for money as enormous portions. Second night we had food to share. Good value for money and reasonable location.

My husband and I stayed here one night before taking the Northern Explorer scenic train. The room was very spacious with two comfy chairs as well as places to put our suitcases. The water pressure in the shower was very strong, which I LOVED but my husband didn’t really like. The only downside was the shower had one of those glass doors without a rubber gasket at the bottom so the water leaked out a bit even if you pointed the shower head the other way. The room was a bit musty smelling and damp, but cleared up pretty well when we turned the aircon on. The front desk was really helpful. We got Indian takeout for dinner and when I asked the front desk for some silverware they gave me a full set of dishes to use. We purchased the breakfast the next morning and it was really good and worth the cost. They will make you eggs to order for no extra charge, and have all the other full breakfast fixings on their buffet. They have instant coffee for free or you can order espresso for an added charge.
