We had a 2 night stopover in Tongariro Lodge whilst travelling through New Zealand . We had a 1 bedroom lodge which was lovely, really comfortable bed, heating , fridge, tv, and was exceptionally clean. We ate both breakfast and dinner in the restaurant and I have to say the food was outstanding. The staff could not have been kinder or more helpful, helping us with walking routes and places to visit . The grounds beautifully kept. I would highly recommend staying here

We booked a "1 bedroom chalet" but this was really a room with a small bathroom. The photos on the website looked so nice - larger and more recent units maybe but we are just a couple and did not need 3 or 4 bedrooms. We do like having a separate area if one of us wants to get up early (we were on a 2 month trip through NZ). There was a lovely little balcony overlooking a private garden with a table and chairs. As there was only 1 chair in the room, we used the balcony chair to sit on inside. No screen to on the door to the balcony. The fridge was underneath the desk- who thought this was a good idea? As could not really sit at the desk to read etc. Cleaning is only 1x every 3 days. They also asked for guests to take off shoes and wipe feet on rug at entry but there is no bench to sit and take off your shoes there. The windows are single paned so it did feel cold even in summer as NZ was having a very cold & rainy spell. The bed and pillows were comfortable. There was parking by our room. Not sure who decided this could be 4 stars. It may be the nicest place to stay in area but is basic which is fine if that is what our expectations had been- we picked it as wanted to hike Tongariro Nat'l Park and did not want to stay in a hostel or to camp in a tent. In sum, this is NOT a 1 bedroom Chalet but a 1 basic room cabin. Also, no trout is served as you can only eat it, if you fish it and bring it back to cook.

We very much enjoyed our 4 day stay at this lodge. It was the perfect base for fly fishing and white water rafting activities. The grounds are well kept and the 3 bedroom cottage we stayed in was comfortable, clean, private, and did a great job connecting us with nature. Stay we are super friendly and helpful. We had a couple dinners at the lodge and although the food and service was great, we found it was overpriced. There are other options in the town 5min away. That said, I would not hesitate to recommend this place.
