I was here over 15 years ago. The Mercure has remained true to itself. Since then, little has changed. There are two renovated floors, but hopefully, they are reserved for long-stay guests or those with Platinum or Titanium status; at least not for us who booked a "suite." The average age of the (bus-traveling) guests was a sprightly 75 years, and the density of walkers was high that Friday; they did not care that the rooms were also outdated. No hotel information on the TV, so one does not miss any offerings. The suite resembled more of a social housing unit in terms of furnishings and style. No air conditioning, no Nespresso coffee machine as a standard in such categories, just instant packets. Power outlets at the desk were illusions without function. One had to place everything on the floor if one wanted to use the outlets located there. The hairdryer probably dated back to 1989 when the house opened. There is no showering option at the tub. The guest is expected to take a full bath daily without flooding the bathroom. The bedroom and living room radiate the charm of post-communism from the 90s. With a bit of design will, at least a carpet and a less tacky kitsch print on the walls could have made the dark living room more pleasant. At least the worn-out chairs were replaced years ago. The standard rooms have nevertheless preserved this "charm" of the 90s. The online impression, in any case, suggests a Mercure hotel product that meets international standards. The reality is less so. Positive: Lobby large and refurbished.
The staff is striving to ensure the process runs smoothly. The receptionist speaks German and was helpful. The breakfast is very good, also with a local touch. Even the scrambled eggs are not the usual dried Tetra Pak industrial preparation as is often the case. Fairly, one must say that this is a three-star hotel. Nevertheless: On the crumbling facade stands Mercure, and the standard should be contemporary. There are better options in the area, such as the Radisson, for guests with a bit of taste.
