Union Tourist Hotel

We booked a 2 night stay in a suite with a balcony. When we arrived we were given a room on a high floor that was very small and lacked the promised space and balcony. We went to reception where little English was spoken and asked for the room we thought we had booked. We were told 'all rooms same' so we went back to our small room to examine our booking and the internet descriptions of the Union hotel and its rooms. We were disapointed in the price we had paid for a very small room when compared to price/size of others we had stayed in during our tour of South Korea. Armed with internet and I translate we approached reception again and more firmly asked for the standard of room we had booked, after some discussion between staff members we were give the key to a room on the fourth floor, a much bigger room, bigger bathroom, a slight smell of cigarette smoke but no balcony. Emboldened we approached reception for the third time to ask for the level of room we had paid for in advance via Booking dot com. A new key for another fourth floor room which low and behold was larger, could be described (loosly) as a suite and had an enclosed balcony. It was not the same room as outlined in the hotel official photograph but was fine. Had we be given this room on check in we would have been more than happy as it was we felt (for the very first and only time during our months travel in South Korea) that we were being taken advantage of where the hotel having been paid in advance for a suite tried to give us a small standard room. Due to this we would not recommend this hotel. Try hotel Ride close by brand new and looking smart. Union hotel was very shabby. Our first room was very small but appeared to have all the essentials. Our second room, suite with an enclosed balcony was much better. Two beds, comfy and clean, TV, aircon, kettle, fridge . WiFi and complimentary water. Room had a pine look, enclosed balcony really had no view and looked into a wild garden of sorts.Bathroom was large with separate bath and shower. Fittings needed an upgrade as the shower door would not close and water flowed into the bathroom. Hotel coffee bar was never open while we were there. Small 24 hour shop about 3 minutes walk away. Hotel is close(walkable) to the railway and metro station so the city is accessable. Shopping and eateries near the station and just beyond. As stated earlier we would not stay here again, Hotel Ride in same location looks much better and has a cafe that was open underneath it. Staff spoke little engish. Large Chinese tour group checked in while we were there however were not noisey.

Helpful and friendly service, quiet and comfortable. Everything one could hope for when travelling for work - good firm bed, desk, reliable wifi. Great view as a bonus (I stayed on the 11th floor. No complaints!

The hotel is located at a convenient location for a traveller by train (KTX) as it is located less than 5 minutes away from Daegu Station. For daytime activities you can get the subway there as well, although Daegu has only 2 subway lines. There is no breakfast service in the hotel and the coffee shop in the hotel literally only sells coffee. However there are shops and restaurants nearby, as the hotel is at a walking distance from the outskirts of the main shopping area of Daegu. There is excellent service in the hotel, including daily free bottles of water (which are very useful in the summertime) and nice toiletries, including toothbrush.
