Ayre Hotel Alfonso II

A small hotel but very friendly. The staff takes care of every detail to make you feel at home. It is not in the center of the city, but near enough for a lesurely walk or a short taxi ride. I look forward to returning.

Decided on this hotel as it was in a residential area just outside of the main centre. First of all, Oviedo is a great Spanish city and has a lovely feel about it. Hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the train station (and a further five minutes to the bus station) so ideally situation in that respect. However, hotel is next to a busy road and right on a junction so traffic noise is pretty constant and double glazing is practically non existent. The only way to muffle the noise is to have the air conditioning on. This is controlled by reception and unfortunately they turn it off half way through the night so I had to go down about 5am to ask them to turn it on again (as it was a very warm night - even in September!). Beds were comfortable. However, the wardrobe was ridiculously tiny so not much space to hang clothes or cupboard space to put clothes away. (most clothes had to stay in the suitcase). Bathroom was spacious and good bath and shower. A few loose tiles on the bathroom floor which were noisy when walking around in the bathroom. Had to ask for a replenish of toiletries on our second day as the cleaner hadn't left any. The outside cafe/bar area where there were a few tables was not cleaned for three days (ashtrays just getting fuller). Breakfast on the first day was fine. However, that was it. Following that we had to wait for cereals and fruit to be brought out whilst the waitress (and receptionist) were busy pandering to other guests (ie bringing them fruit juice, coffee etc). It was supposed to be a buffet breakfast so everything should have been ready by the time the restaurant opened. When we complained, all the receptionist did was make excuses, ie we like things to be as fresh as can be so we don't bring everything out at the beginning - I do not think this applies to cereal and fruit!! Our stay at this hotel was very reasonably priced but I did not pick it because of that - when searching for hotels in Oviedo they were all of a similar price. But I feel that I picked the wrong one of this occasion.

Third time to stay in the hotel. Always the same polite, warm and helpful staff. It is a pleasure to come back! Although it is a bit away from the center of town, the stroll down is very pleasant. A taxi for the uphill (gentle) climb is not too expensive.
