Port Canigo

Our stay in this apartment was a real nightmare. What was supposed to be a family vacation turned into a deeply humiliating experience because of racism and intolerance from some members of the community. From the very beginning, we showed respect for everyone, but it was useless. The problem wasn’t the burkini, as some have tried to make it look, but clearly the fact that we were wearing the hijab. Because of our appearance and faith, we were singled out, harassed, and eventually evicted from the housing. Yeah, we were literally kicked out. No one's spoken to us. No one listened to us. There was no dialogue or respect. Just pure rejection, based on prejudice. This is religious and racial discrimination, no more and no less. If this community does not want Muslim tenants, let it announce it clearly instead of hypocritically renting to families that it will never fully accept. This place is closed, intolerant and deeply racist. We do not recommend this place to anyone who does not meet their "standard". If you are Muslim, wear a hijab, or simply look "different", flee this place. It is neither a safe nor welcoming place, let alone worthy of your holiday. What we've been through there is a disgrace.

We stayed here in May 2017, read the reviews, so we knew it would not be great, but are looking at buying an apartment in the area, so needed to know what it was really like. Lots of car parking spaces, but also lots of dog mess, litter, weeds growing out of the paving slabs - generally very unkempt. Realised that we would have to go somewhere else to get our keys, but as we were prepared for this, managed it not too badly. I think it is an awful way to handover keys - there should be someone at the reception desk to greet you, or someone should at least contact you before you travel with directions and times that keys can be collected. The inner hallways of the apartments I thought looked like the inside of a prison, but my husband suggested that perhaps it had been designed on the interior of a bit ship. Either way, it is very dark and very noisy. We were in a ground floor apartment in which we could hear everyone else's front doors open and shut, we could hear people in the apartment next door walking around - sounded as if they were inside our apartment. Could also hear them in their bathrooms. The pool was shut, the restaurant was shut, the shop was shut. As others have said before, it is at least a 30 minute walk to the beach and it is not a very pleasant walk - lots of dog mess that needs to be watched out for. The only positive thing I can say about the apartment we stayed in is that it was very clean. I purposely looked for dust and dirt and there was none. Also, you get what you pay for - it cost us approximately £100 for three nights. Whilst I was unpacking, my husband knew I didn't particularly like the apartment and nor did he, so he booked us into the Port Salins Hotel in Empuriabrava the next night, so we only had to stay at Port Canigo for one night. Port Salins Hotel is superb, and Empuriabrava much nicer than Roses. To summarise, stay here if you like lots of noise from your neighbours and don't mind the bar/restaurant/shop being shut, don't mind walking for at least half an hour to the beach/bars/restaurants etc and be careful of all the dog mess outside of the apartments. Remember - you only get what you pay for.

We had to go elsewhere to pick up the room keys. We were charged extra eur 40 for cleaning, a few eur for tourist tax and 20 eur for towels and sheets. We booked a few months in advance and requested an appartment with a view of the canals.. What we got was an appartment 046 at street level with no view, no aircondition.. As the apartmet is located at street level, you cannot leave the windows open at night so it is terrible hot which make sleeping impossible. The standard is very low.. The apparment smells terrible, dirty and the bed in the master bedroom is not suitable for two adults.
