Parador Santo Domingo de la Calzada

The hotel is located in the middle of the old town and, if you know how, is also easily accessible by car; however, the underground parking garage is only for drivers who are skilled or know their car very well, as it is extremely narrow. Due to the age of the hotel, the rooms are somewhat noisy, but they are well-equipped in accordance with the Parador and everything is clean and well-maintained. The reception is staffed excellently and helps you quickly and well with all questions. The breakfast is also varied, but there is again a lot of bread that is already sliced and therefore regularly dry. Coffee from a pot is, at least for me, no longer quite up to date in this day and age. The historic feeling radiates a luxurious flair. Overall, a nice stay with a few downsides.

We spent 2 nights in a superior room, as part of a visit to Rioja. The hotel is situated in the centre of the old town, next to the cathedral, and accessible by car, if you follow the hotel’s instructions. The hotel has external closed parking about 40m from the hotel, and an underground garage, both of which are payable. Our room was large, and comfortable, overlooking an enclosed area, so very quiet. We slept well. Breakfast was by sitting, but not particularly enforced, and was the usual high Parador standard, as was the dinner we had one of the nights during our stay. Service generally was excellent, the staff friendly, helpful and available, both in the hotel and restaurant. In summary, an excellent stay, well up to the high Parador standards.

A superb stop on my Camino. From the impeccable welcome to the comfort, everything was perfect. And a big thank you for the picnic bag, which was very useful for my long stage of the day.
