Overall, the stay was fine, but there are two things I wish I had known before booking. The mattress was incredibly firm, to the point where it felt more like sleeping on a padded cot than a hotel bed. If you like an extra firm mattress, this may not bother you, but it had a noticeable impact on our comfort and sleep quality. The other thing to be aware of is that some standard rooms appear to have little to no natural light. We were eventually moved to a different room, which we greatly appreciated, but even that room had limited natural light. Throughout our stay, we often found ourselves wondering whether it was actually overcast outside because so little daylight made it into the room. There was no indication during booking that this could be the case. For some travelers that won’t matter, but for others it can significantly affect the overall experience. There was also some construction noise during our stay, although that felt more like bad timing than an issue with the property itself. On a positive note, the staff was wonderful throughout our stay. Everyone we interacted with was genuinely kind, helpful, and accommodating. Their hospitality was easily the highlight of the experience.

This was my first stay at the Avani Alonso Martinez, and I found the hotel quite charming. Local artists are featured throughout the lobby, and there is a vending machine featuring Madrid landmarks on small card stock. The staff at the hotel was friendly, welcoming and always available to assist. The check-in process was smooth, as was the check-out process. The location is amazing, and easily walkable to Gran Via, Plaza Mayor, Retiro Park or the Paseo del Prado. If walking is not your thing, there is a metro stop right outside the door of the hotel.

I miss my city, and it was like being in my own home. Clean, original, and traditional. What more can I ask for during the week of San Isidro?
