Landgasthof Hirschen

We ate with friends in the Hirschen in Jan 2012. We had the famous "Gargenspiess", which is meat hanging from a gallows flambed at the table with sauces and salad. Excellent fun, very tasty, very friendly owner and good service.

Wengen is in a great location to use as a base if going to Kleine Scheidegg and/or Jungfrau. Breakfast room has views across valley. Free Wifi - worked well. Good breakfast. Tiny toilet/shower anex (presumably built on to convert previous house into a hotel). 600m uphill walk from station with bags might be trying for some, but not too difficult. Cablecar up to Mannlichen station is incredibly expensive. Train to Kleine Scheidegg is similar price, takes much longer and provides much better views

Admittedly the end of August is the end of summer tourists and we and friends were only ones staying at hotel. But. The service consisted of showing us our rooms and how to acess door after hours. Breakfast was minimal, a few pieces of cheese and meat, corn flakes and the stale end of yesterday's bread! No fruit, fresh or tinned. Location amplified noise from any other complex below! Atmosphere like a dead great grandmother's house left untouched for 70 years. Rooms very small and knees touch door when sitting on toilet. We paid less for hotels in Murren and Kandersteg and got far better rooms, food and atmosphere! In fact I would suggest skipping Wengen as an overnight. Nothing to recommend it
