Bernerhof Hotel

LOVED THIS HOTEL and would go back in an instant!!!!!! Originally slated to stay at a more expensive hotel in town, we changed our reservations to Bernerhof, and could not have been happier. Adorable, clean, steps away from the train station, Coop grocery and everything central. Our room (31) was absolutely perfect, with a breathtaking view of Eiger,etc from our room. (If you can, upgrade to a view room with balcony!) The room was very quiet internally, and the windows protected us from any street noise. We slept very well in this room. (This room was buffered from any ajacent rooms, so it was super quiet.) The fan and curtains kept the room cool even during the recent heat wave. (FYI, real A/C is non-existent in Grindelwald although generally not needed unless a heatwave.) Balcony was a great place to have dinner from Coop grocery, or a pizza, and or a glass of wine while enjoying the view. On occassion there is a live band visible/ audible, but it is early in the evening and very enjoyable. CHRISTINE (and frankly, all team members at Bernerhof) was just absolutely fantastic, giving us great guidance on local restaurants and points of interest, and happily assisting us in every way. Breakfast was included in our booking, which was nice for fueling up on hiking days. Basic but more than acceptable for our needs, with hot items, cold items, fruit, coffee, juice, meats, cheese, granola and baked goods, etc. They have free coffee and tea 24/7 in their lounge. And we especially loved that you could use their breakfast room later in the day to heat/prepare meals from Coop grocery, which we did on multiple occassions because it was inexpensive and easy. Plus, we really loved eating dinner on our room balcony, so this came in handy when we were tired from hiking and just wanted to stare at the view. The hotel also has a small European elevator, although there are several steps to get in the front door. Our specific room was very spacious, extremely clean, and had good storage. We were able to hand wash some clothes and discreetly let them dry quickly on the balcony while we were away exploring for the day. THIS was a great find in pricey Grindelwald, and we are so happy that we found it!

Unfortunately, this was the least satisfactory hotel experience we had during our trip in Switzerland. The hotel’s main strengths are its excellent location in Grindelwald, close to the train station, and the beautiful mountain views from the balcony. However, compared with other hotels we stayed at in Zermatt and Pontresina, we did not feel that the overall value matched the price. The rooms are very small, and the sound insulation is minimal. We could easily hear conversations and movements from neighbouring rooms. While small rooms are understandable in mountain destinations, we found the layout difficult to use comfortably. The bathroom and shower were particularly cramped. We also felt that the property could benefit from some modernization and attention to detail. Several aspects of the hotel gave a more basic impression than expected for the rate charged. Most disappointing was our experience when we expressed our concerns and asked whether a partial refund for one or two nights could be considered. The receptionist was kind and helpful and graciously offered to discuss the matter with the manager on our behalf. Unfortunately, the request was ultimately declined by management. While we understand that hotels have policies regarding refunds, we felt the situation could have been handled with more empathy and customer care. Overall, the location and view are excellent, but we believe there are better-value options in the area.

What an amazing view from our room !! We were greeted at the hotel reception by Elias, such a lovely warm person, the kind of person that just starts off your stay perfect. He also upgraded us to the Panorama Suite, which was wonderful, the suite had a huge balcony, huge windows and a lounge suite to just watch the magical mountains and snow. The hotel is only 100m walk from the train station . Coop store and many other stores and restaurants close by. (Elias, as per our conversation, please come to Australia one day).
