Warm and friendly Hotel. Single rooms a little small, but you only sleep there so OK with me. English spoken, by Andrea and her staff. Buffet Breakfast (Plenty to eat), Great meals in the Restaurant in the evening, we ate here on the First and last night Twin/Double room and the front overlooking the lake. A further visit, most likely Christmas 2017.

The rooms we stayed in was lovely, with well fitted out bathroom with good strong shower. People complain about the bells, but we only ever heard the 6am bells which last for 2 or 3 minutes. Other than that, we never heard them. Food is wonderful, but expensive. They have clearly done a lot to improve the rooms and the food with good chef doing excellent food at night. Breakfast at 20 Swiss francs was expensive for what it was - continental only - that would be my only complaint. People also mention the trains - no room directly looks onto the railway as the hotel sits in an L shape and therefore sits behind the hotel in front and we never had any problem with the noise of the trains. I think the negative reviews from 2013 are way out of date

It was late when we crossed the San Gottardo towards France in early August. Our children were tired, so we called a couple of hotels listed on the GPS, and ultimately decided to try the Hostellerie Sternen. Don't do the same mistake: it is incredibly expensive for what it offers, and should not be listed with more than one or two stars - the owner is quite nice, but the rooms are extremely old (and very badly decorated (the one our children had actually scared them)); the beds were not comfortable; the bathrooms we had looked like coming from a youth hostel; the carpets in the hallway were stained here and there...and merchandise trains would wake us up all night...which somehow prepared us for the dreadful breakfast made of bread, plastic croissants, and a sip of yoghurt (as there was not enough stock for a full family). Not exactly the experience one would expect from a hotel listed as a Swiss 3*!
