We can highly recommend the Royal Hotel for a stay in Basel. The location is perfect. It offers a fantastic breakfast and the staff is very nice, accommodating, and attentive. The room was very clean and, despite the central location, very quiet. My husband and I would love to come back again.

First, let me explain my mistake. We were on a three week train tour of Switzerland, so we wanted to book hotels within easy walking distance of the train stations. Not having been to Basel in almost 60 years (I was just a kid), I hadn't realized Basel has two train stations and the Royal isn't near the Swiss Rail station So, we had to take a 15 minute car ride to get there. The Royal is a minimalist hotel, almost self service. Once you're made your reservation, there is a display panel outside the front door where you enter your name and arrival/departure dates to gain entry. The rooms are spacious by European standards, clean, and the bed comfortable. It is right on the #6 tram stop that takes us into Old Town, and the hotel automatically provides you with free transit passes good for your length of stay. The breakfast in the lobby is plentiful, so you really can stoke up for the day. All in all, while I did book us near the "wrong" train station, I'm glad I did.

Short overnight stay. Structure with good value for money. Easy to reach by car or public transport. Very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are spacious and very clean. Minimum services, but staff available for ev requests. Pets are welcome. Area perhaps a little 'noisy early morning just because of the proximity of public transport.
