I came to Hsinchu for work. I knew from word of mouth that the front desk staff was very friendly, but they were really very good. They work hard, but I feel that they are kind people. They especially care about Japanese guests, so they actively speak to me in Japanese (they also have no problem speaking in English), and when I returned to the hotel in the evening, they seemed to know my name and room number, and just by looking at my face, they handed me the room key without me having to say anything. This doesn't happen in Japan, so I felt very special and treated very well. The room was spacious and spacious. The facilities were not particularly new, but the sheets and towels were clean and changed every day, so I was fine. The toilet had a washlet. The breakfast was a buffet, and it changed a little bit every day. It was similar to the ones in Japan, but slightly different, so I felt adventurous and wanted to try a little bit of everything. It was generally delicious. There was so much food that I couldn't eat everything. There was an elementary school next door, and I could hear what sounded like musical instrument practice during the day. Big City department store (where SOGO is located) is a 10 minute walk away.

The hotel is a bit old and staff speaks only a little English but it works fine. Beds are comfortable according to European standards. Important to us! Breakfast is chinese style so we bought our own bread and cheese. Situated just outside the city center (Big City area) it's still walking distance. Some traffic sounds but in general quiet. Well worth its price.

I felt deceived when I arrived. The lobby was perfect - new, modern, clean - and just as advertised. But the room...that's a different story. It clearly is not new, nor clean, and has been well used by thousands before. A few details: filthy carpets; wall paper peeling off; bathroom mold (the kind that can actually be scrubbed off); dirty corners (behind the curtains, window sill); and it had no view at all - the window was laminated over. The bed was clean, comfortable, and I slept well though. Forget the western breakfast, it's 95% Asian food. They had Frosted Flakes cereal, some breads, and coffee/tea. That was it. Not even eggs (western or asian eggs! ;) For this money, and in this star range, you will fare far better at http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g297906-d589208-Reviews-Golden_Age_Hotel-Hsinchu.html The Golden Age is an older hotel, but very well maintained with well appointed rooms.
