In general, after staying at the Howard Plaza Hotel for 2 nights with my partner I would NOT recommend you stay here. Pros: 1. Great staff! Super friendly and helpful, even as a primarily English speaker. Probably the best part of the stay 2. On-site money changer and ATM, pretty convenient 3. Decent location for public transit. Right next to major bus stop (including 1062 to/from TPE airport), and ~10min from nearest red/blue line stops (not great in hot weather but it is what it is) Cons: 1. Even at its best, the facility is…OLD. I’m talking old carpet with weird stains, musty smelling AC that takes a while to cool down, thin walls, and no power outlets next to the bed (minor quibble but walking across the room to get to my charging phone gets annoying) 2. However, by far the worst part of the trip is the CONSTRUCTION. The hotel is going through a major renovation right now that’s led to a host of headaches. For example, 2 out of the 3 hotel entrances are closed right now, and upon arriving we had to walk an extra 5min to the only entrance at the back of the parking lot (where construction workers still had to move out of the way to let us in). In addition, there’s a strong paint smell everywhere and construction noises (including drilling) starting at 8 in the morning In summary: I’ve been to 3 or 4 star hotels that felt more luxurious (and this is supposed to be a FIVE star hotel). Even at its best it’s not a great hotel, but with the renovation it’s unbearable and poor value. While we got upgraded to a slightly bigger room, we received no other accommodations for the situation (i.e. no meal vouchers, any comp to our room, etc.). Be aware of these risks before you come here!

A solid if not somewhat dated hotel nearby great shopping (SOGO) and the MRT. Their breakfast is a tad pricey by Taipei standards but is really solid. The shower may feel a bit cramped. The family chooses this hotel all the time.

Our stay at this hotel was very dissapointing. Even though they are undergoing massive renovations, they are still charging high prices. When we checked in they told us that the pool was closed & the gym was moved to a temporary location. I was planning to use the pool everyday after touring. They never mentioned at check in that the rooms were being renovated on several of the floors and the noise will begin early in the morning & go all day. So, after traveling for 24 hours from the US we woke up at 8:30 am to loud pounding and jack hammer noise. We asked to be moved to a room where the construction was not above us. They gave us another room where the noise above us was even louder & we could hear the commuter train every 5 minutes. We then were moved to another room. The rooms are on the smaller size, worn with dirty carpeting. The beds are pretty hard. The buffet breakfast was very nice with many options.
