I was in Taiwan for the first time ever last week and got billetted at the Green World Hotel Jian Pei. It initially struck me as very old-school, but it was a comfortable enough place to rest and relax in after a hectic couple of days in the field. The meals are basic but satisfying, but its location catty-corner to Taipei's Japanese Quarter means you get access to everything from good coffee to traditional treats like xiao long bao and beef noodles. Props also for the bathtub; seriously necessary for someone with knee issues after a whole day on one's feet.

The rooms are OK but dated, the bathroom is pretty good. The breakfast is good and breakfast people (independent caterer) are really nice. The issue with the hotel is during the earthquake of 3rd April 2024 that killed more than 5 people in Hualien, 7+ on the scale, and was 5+ in Taipei on the Richter scale, we had no help from the hotel. It happened just before 8am. No PA to tell us to evacuate. The lift worked. As tourists, we had no idea if the incident was normal or extreme, we had an aftershock in the room again after 8am. We went downstairs to a busy receptionist on the phone. Was she calling room by room? No PA worked in the 7th floor, and as we didn't hear anything, it probably didn't work on the 8th and 6th either. We were "evacuated" just in front of the hotel, so if anything falls, it's on us. When asked, the receptionist said the lift working during earthquake is normal (?) and that they will check what happens with the PA system. No one from the hotel talked to us, reassured us, informed us or guided us. The breakfast people were the only ones to talk to us. We were left completely alone and should the floor had collapse of the ceiling fell on us, we would have been on our own. Not nice!

I made a duplicate booking by mistake. One booking was for 25-29th June and the other one was for 26th-29th June. I arrived to the hotel on 27th and despite several negotiation and reconfirmation, the hotel was still greedy enough to charge me for no-show for both bookings,which means that i had to pay 3 nights no-show, the amount was more than what i paid for my actual stay. They cancelled both of my bookings on booking.com and blamed Booking.com for not waiving off the charges and they had no option but to charge me. Booking.com was kind enough to contact them and negotiate but they refused to help. Additionally, when i requested for late check out until 4pm, they also charged me for $53. Total i had to pay for almost $400 just to learn that there wont be any next time to this hotel. Being a hotelier, this is the first time i encountered this problem when travelling. NEVER AGAIN. Any one asking for proof, i have all the screenshots and emails to share.
