Eden Bungalows

Fabulous as always. Beautiful small hotel in the heart of Fisherman's Village. Super, amazing, friendly and very helpful staff. Rooms are very clean and tidy. Fresh towels almost every day . The pool is so relaxing and the sunbeds are really comfy. During the day you would never know you were in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of Bophut. Shout out to Jean Marc the owner. Such a lovely man.

Good points. Located directly within Fisherman’s Village, yet still quiet, it literally could not be better placed. Nice pool if small, but still nice after a walk around the village. Not, so good points. Pool closed at 20:00. Why? Air con control was not responsive I.e., altering the dials didn’t appear to change anything. The TV (don’t moan at me dear reader for wanting to catch-up with world news, this whilst I prepared myself each evening to paint the smallish town a distinguished red), had no terrestrial channels, only paid for ones available. I tried to repeatedly scan for channels but to no avail, so gave up! No breakfast offered, even though there were cooking facilities onsite for lunch/dinner. A good brekkie, really would have added considerably to my stay, as it literally forces me up & out in the morning. Upon first arrival, admittedly proclaiming “Hi honey, I’m home” with a gleeful if tired smile was probably not the very best way to introduce myself, but that’s me. Sadly, I was greeted by neither a smile nor warm welcome. I had been travelling for nearly 20 hours straight from London, and had worked the actual day of travel, so either offering would have been appreciated. Sullen, is prehaps the best way to describe my host’s demeanour to my unappreciated smiley overture. And, it didn’t get any better… I had been allocated ‘Flamboyant’, but it soon became apparent that although classed as a ‘Deluxe Bungalow’, it was actually very small footprint wise, even for a solo traveller with but a single case. Flamboyant, though on two levels, whereby the upper level contained just an unmade, and rather sorry looking mattress, accessible via an open and what could be slippery ladder with no guard rail, was not what I had expected at all. However, next to my bungalow, was Camelia and Jasmin, also classed as Deluxe, which from the outside looking in, both appeared to be considerably larger, with a type of chaise longue in place that would have provided an ideal home for my case, I.e., off the floor and out of the way. Accordingly, I respectfully asked said sullen receptionist, if a move to either Camelia or Jasmin would be possible? The receptionist appeared unsure and was unwilling to make a decision. A call was made there and then to her ‘boss’, and I was told to ask again at 11:00 when he, Jean-Marc would be free and available to discuss the matter further. It was by now 20:30, so I unhappily agreed. The following morning, I trundle to reception at exactly 11:00, where a smiling Jean-Marc was sat with others. However, that was the end of any smiles at Eden Bungalow's for me. The conversation lasted but 2 minutes if that, and my request to be moved to either Camelia or Jasmin was roundly refused, this in a manner I found wholly unacceptable, Gallic charm clearly missing from the interaction. Sometimes folk’s, it's not what you say, it's how you say it that matters! Jean-Marc sited future guests requiring connected accommodation as the reason. This may well be true I have no way of knowing, but both Camelia & Jasmin were empty for a further two nights, and then only one was occupied on the third night. Realising it was pointless to argue, I left Jean-Marc, simply saying in a quiet, unfaltering voice; I was; “very, very unhappy”. And that, was it! I have previously walked from establishments when this unhappy, normally due to a host’s unwillingness to discuss or compromise on my requests/concerns, but given a night to cogitate matters, and the high likelihood that I would be saying goodbye to the remaining 4 nights’ accommodation costs, I made the decision to stay, which in hindsight was probably right, if not sensible. Over the coming days, I noticed a considerable warming of attitude to me from the front of house staff, whereby they would all generally wish me good morning/evening. Sadly however, by this time I was already ‘lost’, and just wanted to move on from Eden Bungalow’s, so just smiled and nodded in respectful acknowledgement of their endeavours. I can’t tell you how good the restaurant was, as I never ate there. Nor how good the bar was, as I never imbibed there, even when they had a band playing the kinda music I normally sing (ex-singer). So, I sang and tippled elsewhere down the road at the Irish Bar instead. Anecdotally, when in quiet conversation with another guest poolside, he prehaps best described Jean-Marc as a ‘Basil Fawlty’ character, i.e., a hotelier who enjoyed being a hotel owner, but would just prefer it without the guests getting in the way, and making things untidy. Yep, I don’t think I could put it better myself. Overview. Eden Bungalow’s occupies a fabulous position, in a really nice part of Ko Samui that I was actually new to, even though a regular visitor to the island over the past 20 years. However, barring Khaek, who was forever smiling at me, the dreadfully poor attitude experienced when first arriving, and the wholly nonchalant way my request to be moved was dismissed by Jean-Marc, make a return visit to Eden Bungalow’s impossible, though I will be returning to Fisherman’s Village. Seeing the latest reviews all generally being so positive makes this personal determination all the more contradictory, as it could/should, have been so different. But it wasn’t, it was just one of the worst examples of customer interaction I’ve so far endured as a seasoned traveller. Let’s remember something here folk’s; time away from our own grindstone, is hugely important to our own balance in life, but even 5 days in paradise can still be tainted by poor, and uncaring service. Very good location in the middle of the Fisherman’s village. That also means that most nights the road is closed due to the market and you can’t get a taxi directly to or from the hotel. Luckily there’s a taxi stand not far from the hotel. The area and bungalows are just as pictured. Food good, nice surroundings and aircon worked great. The staff on the other hand was a bit strange. Multiple times guests couldn’t play pool/biljard because the staff was using it. It was not allowed to feed the cats at the property, because apparently the staff did. I never saw them do it, and the kittens looked very hungry. One staff member even try to kick a kitten who was meowing for food. There is a hooker/ladyboy sitting in the lounge every weekend talking with the staff, that was a bit uncomfortable. We were never asked how our stay was. I’m still a bit skeptical to the water bottles they gave us, my stomach was uneasy the whole stay but got better after.
