Baylis House Hotel

The reception staff were hard to understand, I couldn’t work my television as the remote needed batteries that reception didn’t have, so I had to order them in with a food delivery. The bedrooms are essentially right next to the function room, so I couldn’t get to sleep till after midnight. The tea/coffee and milk weren’t replenished, the room had supposedly been cleaned but it was still dirty and when I left and stripped the bed, it was absolutely disgusting! I was also made to pay an additional sum at check in with no explanation why & booking.com have stated no additional payment was necessary, I’ve messaged the property about this with no response. And the floorboards had given way at the bottom of the bed. I will never stay here again and as this was for work will be telling my firm to not use this hotel! Absolute total shame that the current owners focus more on events that happened every night, including a group of drummers when the bedrooms are literally linked to the events room. This is a once grand house, whose heritage and history is being lost, absolutely disgusting to see that another once great house is being destroyed. The main entrance door now leads you to an Indian takeaway with non stop delivery drivers. The original owners must be turning in their graves, personally I would haunt them! This house could be so much more but it’s being left to disappear into rack and ruin and you’d honestly be better staying in a youth hostel. Over £90 per night is really taking the mickey and next time I will definitely read reviews before booking, lesson learned!

Post apocalyptic. The hotel is struggling on all conceivable fronts. The rooms had, at least, clean bedding and the contact points in the bathroom looked not to be an actual health risk. But all the fittings are worn out and damaged in some way. And the decor is reminiscent of photos of the buildings in Pripyat, except the dust is more recent. There was a/c as advertised, but not all rooms have it and I'm not convinced that the unit in the one with a/c that I eventually got was doing much other than circulate warm air. The staff seem to be only passingly familiar with why they are there. I suspect someone will get a knock on the door to receive the TV remote I asked for, in a week or two from now. Probably the best way to get help of any kind is to go past the propped open fire door to the service room and help yourself. All that said, it was such a remarkably bad experience that I shall remember it for years to come.

Booked through Agoda and read reviews on there which were pretty good. In the amenities it says breakfast was optional at £10pp as we checked in I asked about this but was told there was no breakfast, no big deal we'd go to a greasy spoon locally. Then got to our room which was absolutely nothing like the photos provided. I will now go through the amenities hairdryer (none, went to reception and all he kept saying was "there is no hairdryer" so I kept replying "what am I going to do as I didn't bring a hairdryer as it said one was provided" this same dialogue went on for a few minutes before he went and got me one), toiletries (1 tiny tube of shower gel/shampoo and tiny bar of soap for 2 people), towels (2 bath towels 1 hand towel for 2people) tea making facilities (there was a kettle with teabags but only 1 glass and no mugs, we asked for these and they eventually were provided), mini bar (none), ironing facilities (none) trouser press (none) there was a tv but we never used this or the wifi, there was aircon and we got that working. Would we recommend?absolutely not, will we go back? Absolutely not! Such a shame as it could be beautiful as it's set in nice grounds and the buildings/gardens could be stunning.
