We stayed for three nights, arriving Friday, leaving Monday. This was a very good thing because, not the hotel's fault, there were some serious roadworks going on in the pedestrianised area immediately below our window. We only experienced them on Monday morning before leaving. Also not the hotel's fault, but worth knowing before you book (ask for a rear-facing room, I would have, if I'd known), there is a loose metal bridging plate in the gap between the pavement and the road just below, and it clanks loudly EVERY SINGLE TIME anyone steps on it, which is very frequent. I wonder if anyone has asked the council to fix this. It must disturb very many people and I don't think it's related to the roadworks.
Positives about the hotel:
- the staff were all friendly and helpful. One of our cases was carried up to our second floor room for us, because there is no lift, which we did know about.
- there is an abundance of electric and USB sockets in the room.
- the room seemed clean.
- we asked for no de-caff coffee sachets and this was noted and we got extra regular ones every day.
- there is a guest car park, which is excellent for a city centre hotel.
Less positive:
- single ply toilet paper is always a false economy because you just use more. We have encountered this on cruise ships and understand the logic there, but I doubt this hotel is contending with similar sewage disposal issues.
- there is insufficient wall hanging space (none at all in the bedroom). Hotel guests typically want to easily hang up various coats/jackets, hats, bags etc and you can't here. In the bathroom there is just one, very narrow, towel rail, which barely accomodated one bath towel and one hand towel only. We resorted to sharing towels. But there is bags of room for more rails, above this one. There is one hook in the bathroom, not suitable for towels, and there could have been more.
- no toilet brush. This infuriates me because it is conceivable that one guest might wish to "tidy up" the toilet before the other uses it. You can't.
- the bar and restaurant are closed on Sundays and Mondays. We did know this, but we forgot and saved the hotel restaurant for our last night, a Sunday. On the plus side, we were supplied with a list of possible other places nearby to try, and we tried The Truro Lounge, which was excellent and unlikely to be beaten.
- the bed felt small to us, we're used to a king size and this was a standard double. Possibly there are bigger beds for a higher price.
- the Continental breakfast was good but I'd like to suggest the inclusion of pains aux raisins alongside the chocolate ones. Not everyone wants chocolate for breakfast. Every morning I was hopeful, every morning I was disappointed. The cooked breakfast was also good, though it comes at an extra cost (we knew this).
