Regent Hotel By The Lake

Very disappointing – definitely not a 4-star experience My wife and I stayed for one night, and unfortunately the experience was extremely disappointing. There were so many basic issues with cleanliness, maintenance, organisation and service that I struggle to understand how this hotel can be classed as 4-star. Check-in & organisation Check-in was through the pub opposite the hotel. The bar was very busy and poorly organised. There was no obvious reception area, and when we approached what appeared to be the reception till, we were simply directed about a foot further along. During our arrival, I witnessed a member of staff use her tea towel to mop up water from the floor, using her boot, before continuing with her waiting duties using the same tea towel. From a hygiene point of view, this was extremely concerning. Room 73 – cleanliness & maintenance Our room was located across the road. The small slate patio outside was covered in dirt, cobwebs and grime, with loose stones and a considerable amount of debris in the gutter and underneath the eaves. It looked as though these areas had not been properly cleaned for a very long time. The room itself had a strong musty smell. The front windows were heavily fogged with condensation, making it difficult to see outside. The room was also cold, with the heating being very unreliable. The décor was tired and mismatched, and despite booking for two guests, the sofa bed had already been made up, meaning we couldn't actually use it as a sofa. Mattress was also stained. The bathroom and bedroom were particularly disappointing: • Torn wallpaper in the bedroom. • Stained and torn carpet near the bathroom. • Wallpaper coming away from the bathroom wall. • Black mould around the bathroom window. • Cracked tile around the toilet. • Damaged bath and toilet seals. • Rusty, detached sink plug. • Soap dispenser on the bath that didn't work properly. These aren't minor cosmetic issues. They are basic cleanliness and maintenance problems that should have been identified and dealt with before the room was allocated to guests. Bar & service We asked housekeeping for a bottle opener but were told to ask at the bar. The bar manager couldn't provide one either. Later, we went to the bar to buy a bottle of wine. Because staff couldn't find a bottle opener, we had to choose a cheaper screw-top bottle instead of the wine we actually wanted. The bar was also extremely poorly organised, with a queue almost out of the door and only one member of staff serving. Breakfast We opted for the full English breakfast, which unfortunately didn't improve the experience. The food was buffet style, lacked flavour and the eggs were overcooked. The tea bags were so poor that I had to use two just to make a reasonably strong cup of tea. Price We booked through Booking.com and later checked the hotel's own direct price for exactly the same room. The direct hotel price was £90 cheaper. That's a significant difference and something guests should be aware of before booking. The positives The location is good for access to Lake Windermere, and the bed itself was comfortable. Unfortunately, that's about where the positives end. Very disappointing – definitely not a 4-star experience Overall This hotel needs to take a serious look at its standards. Cleanliness, maintenance, organisation and basic customer service should be the minimum expectations of any hotel, let alone one advertised as 4-star. Based on our experience, I would rate this 2–3 stars at best. Very disappointing. I certainly wouldn't consider this a 4-star hotel, and unfortunately we would not choose to stay here again.

After a couple of days camping at Coniston we wanted a nice comfortable place to stay for our last night in the Lakes. Our room was spacious, very comfortable and the huge bath was a welcome sight! Great check in with friendly staff, we had a great nights sleep in the super big bed and the breakfast was amazing!

What an amazing venue on the edge of the lake. Walking distance to the town and good food at the Wateredge pub. The room was great, good breakfast (across the road at the pub), nice evening meals too. On site parking a bonus too. I’ll go again (they offer discounts for returning customers).
