The Eagle and Child Inn

A fantastic country pub filled with character. Great staff and absolutely fantastic food. Can't wait to go again.

From the moment we walked in the door to this homely welcoming pub, we knew we'd made the perfect choice. Full of character and warm friendly people, it feels like a genuine local. Our room upstairs was charming, comfortable and totally peaceful with a nice view to the fells. We wouldn't have minded a little bit of noise from the pub, but there wasn't any (and we were there on a pub quiz night, followed by the first night of a bank holiday weekend)! We ate in the pub both evenings, good hearty food and a wonderful atmosphere (the pub quiz was great fun!). Excellent breakfast served in a different dining room, quite unique. Generous serving of fresh fruit and yoghurt was most appreciated. Fantastic base for walking in the Lake District. Beautiful walks right on the doorstep, and you can also take the 555 bus from Kendal to Keswick (via Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere...) right outside the door, as well as bus 6 which goes from Kendal to Barrow. Highly recommended.

The pub had a wonderful atmosphere, value for money, selection of drinks, staff were fantastic and the quality of the food was absolutely excellent. If we return to the Lake District, this is where we'll go for food. We had the venison lasagna (best he's ever had) and the beer battered haddock and chips, which is the best I've ever had and I grew up on the seaside in Devon! All in all, ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐
