We have stayed here many times in the past but each time the decline became evermore apparent. Travelling south from Scotland we thought we’d give it another go in the hope that somebody might have gripped the place and brought it back to life. Alas no. Despite the fabulous location everything about the place speaks of sadness. From the miserable flag to the rotting window frames, from the frayed upholstery to the dated bathrooms (those disgusting old jacuzzi things), to the unkempt tennis court and the unweeded gardens and evidence of cost cutting everywhere, there is little to recommend Holbeck Ghyll. Apart from the staff, of course, who were all delightful. I wish somebody, recognising the wonderful Edwardian bones of the place could sweep in and revive what was once an exceptional hotel. Here’s hoping!!

Holbeck Ghyll exceeded all our expectations. It is in such a lovely location, and has a unique country home feel. The restaurant and breakfasts were incredible, with a variety of choices. We stayed in the Lord Lonsdale Suite; clean, amazing views, fantastic bathroom and such a comfortable bed. The staff here was all very helpful and welcoming but I have to say, the highlight of our stay was the Waiter/Bar Tender Josh. His service was unmatched. He asked about our days, made bespoke cocktails, remembered what we liked, offered to take photos during a lovely sunset- he is a credit to the hotel. Would absolutely return.

Holbeck Ghyll is really nice hotel, although it was a little too quiet at times. It is set in the hills above Lake Windermere with glorious views over the lake and the mountain ranges beyond. The meals in the restaurant were superb. All of the staff we met were extremely friendly and helpful. A particular mention of Josh, who managed the bar both nights. Josh went out of his way to make us feel at home, was very informative about the history of the former hunting lodge and as a result we thoroughly enjoyed our evenings relaxing in the bar. We definitely plan to return. We would say that we were slightly fortunate to come across the hotel when we were searching for a couple of days break at short notice. It would be a shame if it's charms aren't visible to as wide a range of potential guests as possible.
