Cave Castle Hotel & Country Club

We stayed here for one night whilst completing the Yorkshire Wolds Walk. The room was comfortable, the ensuite bathroom fresh and modern, the food in the busy beautiful Windsor Restaurant was the best I have had for sometime and the service was excellent. We had a walk around the grounds after dinner it was dark and beautiful I heard an owl. All was quiet when we retired. We had a look at the spa which looked lovely. But we didnt have time to enjoy. The building has a lot of history and atmosphere. Yes its a little tired in places but this didnt distract from enjoying staying in a bit of history. Its def a special place. And extremely good value.

We stayed at Cave Castle hotel on the evening of Sunday 20th September 2026 to celebrate our birthday weekend. We have stayed at the hotel several times before. This time we were in room 35 which was a nice room but had a view of a lightwell (an unroofed vertical space as part of the building's structure presumably to channel natural light and fresh air down into basement levels. The top of the lightwell was partially netted and there was a portable ladder but no evidence of any workmen. The first issue related to the shower in our room which wouldn’t get hot and consequently we had to have lukewarm showers. The problem seemed to be with the mixer tap. We reported this to reception on the Sunday evening, and we were told it would be reported to the maintenance people. I feel the hotel management really need to arrange a survey to check the plumbing in ALL guest rooms because we overheard other guests complaining about their showers whilst we had a drink in the bar. The second much more disturbing issue related to a flapping sound that could be heard coming from outside our window. When we looked there was a bird – a pigeon – trapped in the netting. This continued all night and we hence had a sleepless night, not to mention the unnecessary suffering being caused to the bird. We reported this to reception on the Sunday who said it would have to wait until Monday morning when the maintenance people would be there. We reported it again to reception early on the Monday morning and one of the handymen said he would have a look, but it turned out he didn’t have a key to the door at the bottom of the lightwell. We returned to our room after breakfast to see the bird gasping and taking its last breath. It then died. Just before we left our room to check out, another pigeon came into the lightwell. We are both animal lovers and donate to animal welfare charities and this is something we did not expect to see. How much longer is this going to continue? The hotel clearly appears to accept illegal bird cruelty on its premises and therefore, we won’t be staying at the hotel again.

We like Cave Castle very much and have stayed here on several occasions. It is a lovely setting and all the staff were friendly and helpful. We booked dinner/B&B, and the food was very nice. Unfortunately, we had a bit of a problem with the plumbing in our room this time. The sink was blocked and no hot water came out of either of the taps. In addition, the electric shower also had a problem because it cycled between scalding hot and freezing cold. All in all, having a wash and shave was a bit of a challenge! We did raise the issue with the front desk and the gentleman said he would "put it in the book", but nothing appeared to be done and the problem persisted throughout. The hotel was very busy (which is great), but it meant we had to dine in a big hall rather than the cosy, much nicer restaurant. I'm sure the hall is great for large parties, but when you are trying to have a romantic weekend away, it takes away from the ambience a little. We felt a little like we were at a stranger's wedding breakfast! The health club and pool are excellent and we enjoyed using them very much.
