Brooks Guesthouse Bristol

The guesthouse was probably lovely when it was first decorated but it was very tired when we visited. Cracked tiles and sink, a musty damp smell throughout, dirty carpets and worn decor. The outside space could really do with a clean and a lick of paint. We stayed in room 17 which backs onto St Nicholas Street. The room was very small, very hot and incredibly noisy. There was no air con or fan and it’s impossible to sleep with the windows open as noise from the bars goes on well into the early hours. We stayed at the beginning of the week so it must be even worse at weekends. The bed was awful - the mattress simultaneously very hard and sagging in the middle while the pillows were small and flat. It was also very squeaky. Another couple who were checking out the same time as us said exactly the same - we’d managed a little sleep, they’d got none at all. We mentioned that the room had been very disappointing and the reasons why to the guy at check out and he could not have been less interested. He just kept looking at his computer screen and said ‘could this day get any worse’! On the plus side we didn’t sample the breakfast but it did look very nice. And it’s right in the middle of Bristol city centre so in an excellent location (just don’t expect much sleep!)

We spent one lovely night in a Winnebago on the roof of Brooks Guest House. This was great fun. It seemed amazing to find 4 shiny old style recreational vehicles on the roof of a building in the heart of the City of Bristol! We loved the sheer craziness of the experience! The bed inside was big and comfortable and the tiny shower bathroom was fine. Despite great heat outside we were cool with a fan and all the windows open to a breeze up in the heights. It was wonderful to be level with the towers and spires of the old city. At night the parking lights came on. The rest of the hotel seemed very nice and if we were staying for more than one night we would probably stay in a room with real space for clothes and luggage. The garden was delightful and the public rooms attractive. Everything was scrupulously clean. We only met one member of staff. He was very welcoming and helpful.

Great hotel in a great spot. Rooms were spotless and comfortable. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Loved the Honesty bar. Will definitely return.
