New County

Booked the New County via Booking.com 10 days before we were due to travel. Total cost for a double room for 2 was £55.00. In all honesty our expectations were not high given that we would be in the centre of historic Gloucester. However, (I’m writing this review whilst currently sat in Harvey’s Bar which is part of the hotel) I’m absolutely gobsmacked as the New County is even better than it describes itself on it’s website. Everywhere is spotlessly clean from communal areas to the bedrooms. Ours being a basic room is far better equipped than some studios that I’ve stayed in elsewhere. We’ve got a full sized fridge, large microwave, kettle etc - absolutely everything we need for a night away from home. Staff are pleasant, helpful and courteous - nothing appears to be too much trouble. Check in was smooth and speedy. Our only regret being that we’re only staying for one night to watch Tom Jones at the Kingsholm Stadium which is conveniently situated around a 1/2 mile up the road from the hotel. However, based upon this brief exposure to both Gloucester and the hotel, we will certainly return and use the New County as our base!

Staying here is fine, but.... I went to book a stay with them again recently and they have refused. Initially they said I was banned due to an issue with Police. They then told Expedia that it was due to being impolite to staff. Firstly the "issue" with Police was in 2021 and did not affect the hotel. Secondly I have stayed twice since. Once in 2023 and again this April. They tried to say maybe I'd used a different name, but as they ask for ID that's not possible. I now have no choice but to take legal action against them. Their director Anthony Clark seems to live in Belgium, which makes a change cos he used to regularly get drunk in the hotel bar, but i'm sure he'll be happy to come over to answer for his companies failings

Stayed 2 nights in March 2026 for Cheltenham Gold Cup. Good transport links, no parking on site at hotel but lots in the nearby streets (chargeable). Stayed in a courtyard room. Simple, basic but could be acceptable if the TERRIBLE thin mattress, thin pillows & thin duvet are seen to. Wouldnt cost much to upgrade this and would be giving a much more positive review if it was the case. Very poor sleep overall due to this. Now walking around like the hunchback of notre dame. It is clear money has been spent updating the bar and lobby areas. Redirecting some of this investment into the sleep quality for guests would be my recommendation. Debated 1 or 2 out of 5. Settled on 2 as wouldnt take much to make it alot better for guests.
