The Elizabeth House Hotel

I stayed here on 28 August 2026, and unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. There was only one woman dealing with check-ins when eight ships had docked in the port and there was also a football match taking place. She was dealing with several unhappy residents as well as those of us trying to check in. I have to say, she remained very polite throughout and explained that she was working on her own. We eventually got checked in and had a dinner booking for 6:30pm. We went to our room, which meant carrying our cases upstairs as there are no lifts. Once we had settled in, we went down for dinner and were told to sit in the garden and that we would be called when a table became available. The dining room only appeared to have around five tables, and the hotel was fully booked. We sat outside and, as the evening went on, it became increasingly chilly. After about an hour, my friend went back to the same woman who had checked us in and asked how much longer we would have to wait. We were told it wouldn’t be long. At around 8pm, we were finally called in because another room upstairs had been opened so that people could sit down. Unfortunately, the room smelled musty and unused, and the tables were not clean. Again, the woman was polite and apologised for the wait. She explained that there were only three people working: herself, a girl behind the bar and a man in the kitchen. While I appreciate that she was doing her best, this clearly wasn’t enough staff to cope with the number of guests. We finally ordered our meals at around 8:10pm, almost an hour and a half after our original booking time. I ordered the homemade steak and ale pie, and my friend ordered fish and chips. The meals arrived at approximately 8:30pm, meaning we had waited around two hours from our 6:30pm booking. Sadly, the food was extremely poor. My so-called homemade steak and ale pie appeared to have been defrosted and microwaved. It was splattered across the plate and looked so overcooked that it resembled corned beef. My friend’s fish had soggy batter and very little fish inside. The chips tasted as though they had been cooked in old, dirty oil, with a very unpleasant greasy taste. The following morning was perhaps the most frustrating part of the whole experience. We believe we met the owners, although there was no introduction, so I cannot say for certain who was who. The names we encountered were Gurgit Singh Basi, Jamie Harjeevan Singh Basi and Rapinder Kaur Basi. One person was serving breakfast in the restaurant, while two others were at reception. My first thought was: why wasn’t the additional restaurant space used the previous evening when so many guests were waiting? We were then asked quite bluntly what was wrong with our evening meal because we had refused to pay the full price being requested. We were told that they needed feedback, so I gave honest feedback about the food and the service. Unfortunately, rather than listening to what we were saying, the response seemed to be that what I was describing simply wasn’t possible: it isn’t, it wasn’t, it can’t be. If you ask guests for honest feedback, you have to be prepared to hear things that you don’t agree with. I wasn’t looking for an argument. I was explaining exactly what our experience had been. The woman who checked us in and dealt with the situation that evening was polite and, in my opinion, was doing her best in very difficult circumstances. My criticism is not aimed at her personally. The issue is the overall management, staffing, organisation and, most importantly, the quality of the food we were served. Unfortunately, this was not the relaxing stay and meal we had hoped for, and based on our experience, I would not choose to stay or eat here again.

We always stay here before our cruise holiday and we leave the car here and get a taxi to the port Staff - Literally the best! So friendly. We met a new member of staff (Kate/Katie) and had a good chat with her. They are just so lovely. Massive shout out to Jamie and Ruppe who we love to see when we stay. Rooms - Some have been modernised and some are dated but are spacious. Our bathroom was huge. Thicker pillows would be better. Food - Check the restaurant is open. Food is great. Breakfast fabulous. Parking - Lots of parking incl next door. You are told to double park if there is a yellow tag on the car in front. There is a Lidl across the road for any last minute bits which you have forgotten. Looking forward to staying next month.

AVOID. Hotel room small. Parking area cramped. No lift. Food basic. Rude staff. Caused us a lot of stress. I recommend booking elsewhere.
