I booked two rooms directly with the Mercure Hotel in Paddington and never received any confirmation of my booking. I called them and was told that I definitely had a booking and would receive confirmation soon, but never did. When we arrived and checked in it was late at night and we were tired and wanted to go to bed. The lift did not not work and reception was full of other guests trying to check in or waiting for the lift to be mended. I was rather surprised when I was charged over £350 for each room for a one night stay. I would never have booked the rooms at this price and because I never received a confirmation I did not know what the charge would be. I was even more appalled when we got to our rooms, they were the smallest and dirtiest rooms I have ever stayed in, but because it was so late we felt that we had no choice but to stay. I complained to the desk clerk in the morning when we checked out and was told that the booking manager would call me. Nobody did, so I rang the hotel and asked to speak to the booking manager. I was told that I should have raised this when checking out and because I didn't they would not consider a refund. When I pointed out that I did raise it with the desk clerk, they said that they would get the General Manager to call me, - nobody did! I e-mailed Mercure Hotels and complained and still nobody has even acknowledged my complaint. I will never stay at this hotel again and would recommend that nobody else does either!

Cozy little hotel, very well located near Paddington station, in a lively neighborhood with shops and pubs. The north of Hyde Park is a 15-minute walk away, Paddington subway is just a few meters away as well as a bus stop to reach the city center. We were not bothered by the trains, however the windows are single-glazed and the street is lively, we preferred to buy earplugs. Very comfortable bedding.

I usually stay at Premier Inn when coming to London for work but Mercure was cheaper on this occasion. I was asked for a passport on check in which was unexpected as a UK national but staff I did have a photo of mine on my phone so not such an issue. I stayed for 2 nights during the week and the lift was out of service for the entire time, I was given a room on a lower floor because of this and the standard double room was much smaller than expected, with scaffolding up outside the one window that blocked the light and both inside and out were in need of updating. The fridge was stocked with water, Coca-Cola and a bottle of Prosecco which was all complimentary and staff were helpful, but I have stayed in Travelodges that were in a similar state of repair.
