Mingalar Guest House

Very comfortable room and good value. There is tea/coffee in the rooms and also a delicious breakfast. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Only a 10-15 minute walk to the shops. Plenty of eateries nearby too.

I might have been unlucky with my room. The bathroom was like a cabinet installed in the room and very small. Wehad to climb a step to get inside. The room was spacious and had two large windows. Bed was standard double, but I guess it's a pattern in UK. Still, for such a big room a queen bed would fit just right. The breakfast room is a bit small and sometimes filled with the smoke and smell of fried food from the kitchen. Nevertheless, breakfast was an event. We were welcomed by Clive, a super friendly gentleman who made our eggs and served us. He made our days brighter every morning! Thanks Clive!! The hotel is quiet, though it's located on a large street with buses and local traffic. It's a 15 minute walk from the train station and most attractions. There are good restaurants on the same street. Good location.

We were greeted by Chris when we arrived. He gave us the tour of the house and some recommendations of things in the area. The home is not too far away from the happenings on the Royal Mile but away enough to have some quiet. I'm not sure what the woman's name was that did breakfast two mornings we were there but she was very nice. Breakfast was good and it was nice to be able to grab some toast and beverages yourself. My only complaint is that room 7 could use a new mattress, it was a little lumpy and hard. The bathroom was small but serviceable. The guest kitchen was a nice touch even though we didn't need to use it. Had our stay been longer perhaps we would've. A Tesco was approximately a 5 minutes or so walk, so groceries were very accessible. We met Clive our last morning there. What a sweet man! He asked about our visit and you could tell he was very genuine. Our flight wasn't until 5:30 that evening. They let us leave our luggage in the office so we could go explore a bit and then pick it up when we were ready to leave. This was extremely helpful. Chris called us a cab to get to the tram stop. It was only about a 10 minute walk but with three heavy bags all up hill and having to cross roadways the £4 cost was well worth it. I would definitely stay again if I came back to Edinburgh.
