Glen-yr-afon House Hotel

Our celebration Sunday lunch was arranged without fuss. Tim and his team served excellent food in sumptuous surroundings where nothing was too much trouble. A most enjoyable day made even better by their kind attention to detail.

We had a wonderful experience at the Glen-Y-Afon. From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly attentive, welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble, and they went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and well looked after throughout our visit. The level of service really stood out — the staff were professional, thoughtful and genuinely seemed to care about making our experience enjoyable. It made such a difference and created a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. A beautiful place with excellent hospitality. We would definitely recommend the Glen-Y-Afon and look forward to visiting again!

Well, where to start! We booked a meal for my parents 66th wedding anniversary- an incredible milestone I’m sure anyone would agree! There were 21 of us in total. Two of our children had their wedding receptions there in 2005 and 2010 and we’ve had numerous celebratory events there over many years. The service and attention to detail has always been first class and the staff have always made us feel welcome and special. Sadly that was not the case this time! Firstly, on arrival, there was no warm welcome, ‘happy anniversary,’ or any acknowledgement that this was a special occasion, we were just pointed in the direction of the bar by Alex (who, in the past has been a wonderful attentive host!) After a quick drink in the bar, we went into the dining room, half of which had been given over to our party. There was a sliding partition door between us and the 2, or 3 tables of what I assumed were residents. This door was left open during our meal- no issue for us, but I’m sure the other guests would have preferred not to have a party of 21, including 5 excited children in earshot! The meal was plentiful and very nice, but no one came to ask us if we wanted drinks, so halfway through the meal, I asked if we could see the drinks menu to order some wine. Eventually they brought the menu and we ordered a selection of wine. After the main course, we waited and waited for the plates to be cleared and in the end, I had to ask for the dessert menu, thinking this would encourage them to clear the plates! The menu was delivered after quite a wait, but still no one came to clear the plates! I decided to ask my 10 year old granddaughter to find someone to ask if we could order desserts. She came back after some time and said, ‘the man said they were just about to come!’ I asked if there was a children’s desserts menu, but was told to order for them from the main dessert menu, which we did because on the children’s menu it said desserts were included in the £24.50 price. (After checking the bill, it seems we paid extra for the 5 children's desserts!) Several times my husband went to the bar to order drinks, but a bar person was nowhere to be seen! All this was VERY disappointing, but the worst was yet to come! My grandson was playing outside and jumped of a wall- completely his fault and he was reprimanded for climbing. However, it was a nasty gash and he was clearly distressed. My daughter in law asked if the hotel had a first aid kit and Alex arrived and offered a bandage. My daughter in law dressed the wound, Alex disappeared and she took my grandson off to hospital, where he had three stitches! To my knowledge, there was no accident book to sign, or any record taken of his injury. The following day, my daughter in law realised she had left my grandson’s shoe at the hotel during the incident. She rang to check it was there and went to collect it the following day. She was handed it by Alex, who didn’t even enquire as to how my grandson was, or what the outcome of his injury was! We are a family who always tip well for good service, but in this case my only tip would be….Could do better!
