Maid's Head

Despite its upmarket image with Bentley cars on display this is actually a pretty basic 3 star property. The bed was very comfortable but the room was dated and typical of many chain hotels. The real tragedy was the restaurant. Again an attempt at an up market image with a menu with extremely flowery descriptions of dishes but in fact not much real selection. We both had Haddock and chips. Both were inedible. The batter was thick and had been fried for too long so was a very dark brown and very greasy. The chips were like poor quality chip-shop chips. Tasted greasy, smelt of old fat and were "floppy". They were a disgrace. There seemed little point in complaining as the "Chef" had clearly thought they were OK to serve. Nobody commented on the fact we had eaten very little. Perhaps it was not unusual. There was a coach loading up guests the next morning when we checked out which perhaps explains its standards if it is aimed at cheap coach tours. We will not stay there again.

The location is fantastic. All staff were lovely - a couple of stand out stars - Holly in housekeeping, very attentive and accommodating for my elderly mother; and Jim in the Bentley was a dream - he really enhanced our whole weekend.

Disappointing - refused service in restaurant as too busy ; colleague given a room with other people's belongings in it. Things happen but manager didnt respond to email complaint until chased weeks later and then pretty dismissive response. Not the top end hotel it was.
