Beautiful hotel with lovely friendly staff.

The room is incredibly small. The bed is not adequate for a couple to sleep. We could not sleep well. It was like a torture. The hotel was on my radar screen only because it is supposed to be a 5* hotel. It is apparently not close to that in any measure. It is actually the worst hotel I have ever stayed.

We stayed here for one night, in room Fruit Pastel (?) , next to the Rowntree Suite, which was a delux room at the front, in the annex. The room and hotel are decorated very quirky, which we really liked. The shower was huge and very good ! The lady who greeted us at checkin was very friendly and welcoming. We didn't catch her name, but she has just graduated from university. We were staying in the annex, which is a lovely building right next to the main hotel. The car park was a bit full, but we managed to find a space. If your car is parked in front of others, they take your key so they can move it if the other car wants to get out. The price is £15 per day. There is plenty of on street parking, but it is limited to an hour. The street where the hotel is, is gorgeous, and in a very good location. Only a 10 minute walk to the centre. The breakfast in the morning was ok. The bacon could have done with a bit longer cooking, the scrambled eggs were not great and the hash brown was over cooked and soggy. I don't think this is the norm though, I just think one of us lucked out. It wouldn't stop us staying again. There is a small choice of cereal , fruit juice and some pastries. The staff at breakfast were lovely. We used the bar in the evening. We were the only ones in it and the bar lady was sat in the office, so we just went to get her when we wanted a drink. There is a resident cat, who had a cold at the time we were there...very cute, but didn't really want it sneezing on us lol. The main reason for the 4 score and not a 5 is purely because one of us, who is a light sleeper, did not sleep well at all. You can hear people chatting in other rooms and the stairs creek, as you would expect from an old building. You can hear people coming and going during the night. Our bed was very creeky and the mattress too soft, but that was personal preference. Having said that, we would stay again, but maybe in a different room because of the bed. It is a great choice for the location, ease of walking to the centre, and just being away from the hustle and bustle.
