City Guest House

We spent a long weekend at the City Guest House. The room and the public areas were spotless clean, the atmosphere "traditionally English" and cosy, and the hosts were very kind and helpful. A plus was the breakfast (full English or continental) included in the price and - of course - the location, only 5 minutes' walk from the Minster and all the other attractions. Would definitely stay again!

We have stayed in York multiple times but we usually stay on the South side but having read the reviews for the City Guest House I decided to give it a try. The positive reviews are 100% correct - the Guest House is clean, tidy and has everything you need; the hosts Julie and Allan are lovely and over the years have cleary mastered the art of being professional and friendly hosts. We stayed in room 4 (double bed with ensuite and spare single bed). The shower was perfect - hot and plenty of pressure; the wi-fi was free and had a good signal; no road noise; some steps to get to the room on the first floor but no problem for us. It was middle of the heatwave period but the fans in our room and in the breakfast area provided sufficient cooling. Breakfast was included and was not only tasty but also plentiful, and Julie was always on hand to ask if you wanted more coffee or toast - which I always do - thank you. We stayed 2 nights and I had the vegetarian breakfast both mornings - and I must compliment Allan because the food was piping hot and tasty on both occassions. The little extras like croissants, marmite, nutella and the numerous jams and marmalades was another lovely touch. Julie was brilliant at engaging people in conversation at breakfast and again struck the perfect balance of being there when needed. When we arrived Allan sorted our car parking permit out and had already replaced/repaired the bathroom extraction fan between us checking in and having a quick walk into York centre; which is less than 10 minutes walk and easy access to loads of good restaurants. I booked direct with the City Guest House and I believe that is the best approach. The included free brakfast and parking made this, without doubt, the best value B&B/Guest House that we have stayed in York, but the fact that it was also clean, excellently hosted and well located means it will be our number 1 go to next time we stay in York, fingers crossed they have availabilty. The City Hotel at York is run by Alan and Julie who are really lovely hosts who care about their guests. The Hotel is clean and well maintained and is perfectly located for walking into York. Breakfast is excellent and overall the stay is great value for money!
