The Milner York formerly the Principal York

I had a genuinely lovely stay at The Milner and would very happily return. I had booked a Superior Double and was amazed at the size of my room. I don't know whether I was fortunate enough to receive an upgrade, as nothing was mentioned, but it felt much more like a suite than a standard hotel room. As well as the large bedroom, there was a separate seating area with a sofa bed and second TV, followed by an additional dressing area. There was masses of space and it made the room an extremely comfortable place to come back to after a day exploring York. The bathroom had a lovely walk-in rainfall shower and the complimentary toiletries were excellent. One small tip for future guests: the shower temperature takes quite a while to respond when you adjust the dial, so give it time before adjusting it again! The room was also very well equipped. Having an iron and ironing board and a fridge was really useful, and I was particularly pleased to find a proper full-size hairdryer rather than one of the tiny hotel ones that takes approximately three working days to dry your hair. Every member of staff I encountered was friendly and professional – even the housekeeping staff made a point of greeting guests in the corridors – but I would particularly like to mention Jennifer on reception, who was absolutely lovely and made me feel genuinely welcome and looked after throughout my stay. The location is superb, particularly if you're arriving by train. I have some mobility difficulties and tire easily, so being so close to the station made a real difference and helped make the whole trip much more manageable. I also really enjoyed using the leisure club and spa. One accessibility point worth knowing is that the spa can only be reached by stairs. They aren't especially steep, and for me it was well worth making the trip down, but it may be important information for anyone with more significant mobility difficulties. Another tiny practical tip: the changing-room lockers can appear not to work! Fortunately a regular visitor came to my rescue and explained that you need to press the keypad buttons very firmly and hold them down until they beep, which can sometimes take longer than you'd expect. The building itself is beautiful, with so many lovely original architectural details, and staying there felt like part of the York experience rather than simply somewhere to sleep. A really enjoyable stay, and one of the highlights of my trip. I would absolutely stay here again.

On the way from London to Scotland, decided to stay in York. Chosen for two nights, we hoped, a good hotel. But in fact, it was an unexpectedly terrible living experience. The building itself is very beautiful, the hotel is also quite convenient, near the station and the centre. Knowing that there is a station next door, we chose a room with City view in advance so that there is no station under the windows. And for the same reason, this category is more expensive than standard rooms. The room was booked and paid for two and a half months before the trip, but even this time was not enough for the hotel to plan the number of rooms correctly. And we got a room in the most detached part of the hotel with a “beautiful” view of the station roof and the peron. My request to change my number was refused. And then they also accused that the agency that booked the room made a mistake and changed on request for a double with two beds. When asked to provide me with a written response about the agency's mistake, the hotel manager promised to do so, but never did so in 2 days. The treatment of guests at this hotel is disgusting. Cheating, charging is the only thing Jennifer's manager is very busy with. The terrible staff of the hotel, led by a disgusting manager, has certainly had no effect on the attitude towards the beautiful city of York, where I recommend everyone to come, but never to choose this hotel to stay!

Great location next to station. Staff were all polite, professional and friendly. Our room, the garden suite, was enormous and beautifully decorated feeling traditional in muted colours. Plenty of wardrobe space and spotless. Very quiet. Easy to walk into the shops in 10 minutes. Thank you for the thoughtful anniversary treat! We had drink in the bar which had a lovely atmosphere and enjoyed our cream tea in the lounge area overlooking the gardens. We had a morning swim before breakfast which was lovely. I asked for GF bread and there were several GF options for breakfast. Only thing I would add is a magnifying mirror in the shower room. Wonder staff
