The Red Lion

We stayed here as visiting family up the road. It’s a fantastic spot if you’re not wanting to pay top price for accommodation in central York especially if you’re driving as you can park on site for free! You get exactly what you pay for. The rooms were clean, we had clean towels and tea and coffee making facilities too. The rooms are on the thin side so you can occasionally hear rooms next door but this wasn’t much of a problem for us as we’re were really only there to sleep. We drove from far away so it was very handy that the owners called us to give us details of how to self check in to the room. We didn’t eat at the pub but the menus looked great. Definitely recommend!

Went for Sunday lunch with the family, very busy but got us sorted quickly, Carvery was amazing, everything hot & full. Great choice of veggies and they also had other options on the menu too. One of us had the Lion burger, he demolished it, loved it. All the staff were so helpful & cheerful in their work, it was nice to see & we had a good laugh with them. Family has been before, but this was my first time & would definitely go back, Well done guys 👏

Some staff friendly and helpful, others quite rude. Breakfast on only day out of three as advised that problems in kitchen however they managed to do Sunday lunches? Tired rooms, no changes in bed linen or tidy of room over the three days To top it all, over charged by £60 and 7 weeks later I’ve still not received any refund as hotel or company uninterested in customers after payment made. Strongly advise to choose somewhere in or around Poppleton where our experience was totally different
