The Baskerville Arms Hotel

Fantastic location. A hotel frozen in time. Built in the late 19th century and remodelled in the 70’s with the trio of pastel coloured bathroom suites. I really enjoy coming here. The food is good. The staff are welcoming and polite and the beds are comfortable. It’s not to everyone’s taste granted, but Zena in reception made us feel more than welcome and did a fantastic job in looking after my daughter and myself. Full English breakfast served from 8-10 and evening meals from 6pm.

As a previous post mentioned it’s definitely not run of the mill hotel. Our room in the main house was clean and comfortable with a great view towards Hay Bluff and the Black mountains. It was really quiet even reasonably close to the main road. Even though music night was on, we could hardly hear them, even though they were directly below our room. The room was huge with a double bed with a single bed and a sofa, along with loads of drawers and cupboards to put your clothes away. They might not be modern , but that added to the charm. Huge TV which didn’t dwarf the room. Large bathroom, with a huge bath! The food was homemade and homely, the portions were generous. The staff were wonderful, a warm welcome and genuine smile from all who worked there. If you like corporate hotels, don’t come here, but if you like a family run hotel with great views, I would recommend it. It’s only a few miles from Hay on Wye with their inflated prices, so if you want a great base to explore the area, with riding stables nearby, what’s not to like.

This is not a “run of the mill” generic hotel. It is a serious one off. It is quirky and unique. If you are looking for a standard “travel lodge” type hotel, pass on this one. But if you want a warm welcome at a one of a kind hotel then stay here. The bedding and towels were of good quality. Bed very comfortable. The room was very large and very clean. There are some “worn marks” on the carpet and some small marks on the wall and ceiling. But these do not detract from the overall experience. Our room had three large windows ( think Pemberly in pride and prejudice) with very beautiful drapes. The views were stunning. We had gold taps that were swans. How many hotels have those? None I’ve stayed in before. The gardens are beautiful ( esp considering the very hot recent weather), the lilies were tremendous. Breakfast was a “help yourself” cooked English breakfast, taken in a beautiful panelled dinning room. The corner room next door once again reminded me of something from a Jane Austen novel. The architecture inside and outside is gorgeous. All the staff were happy friendly and engaging. There is a camp ground, which was virtually empty at the time of our stay. It was very quiet and peaceful. A lovely stay.
