The Mytton & Mermaid Hotel

Had afternoon tea with friends. The food was delicious and of excellent quality. The staff were very pleasant and professional. I really could not fault it. Would definitely recommend it.

We’ve visited a few times since the refurbishment, and it’s gone downhill fast. The place is always busy and the location by the river is great. The dining room is nice but what comes out the kitchen is not what it was or what it should be. We visited last night and that will be our last visit, microwaved bread rolls with the tops burned to give the illusion of cooking them, crispy chicken that tasted like it was straight out of a box from Iceland and anything but crispy- dowsed in sesame oil with overcooked tagliatelle in a sticky over rich sauce. I’ve eaten better in Wetherspoons. My wife left most of her meal, when the waitress asked if everything was okay and we said no not really the response was “oh that’s a shame”. When you got out for a meal you expect a standard, this place is way below standard. All show - no go. Won’t be visiting again.

We had one night stay in this beautiful building with ample parking over two car parks. On the pro side we received a warm welcome from the friendly staff and our room was spotlessly clean with a coffee machine and pods in addition to the usual sachets of tea, coffee and biscuits and there was a large, powerful floor-standing fan provided. Unfortunately, the room was on the second floor and I struggled with the stairs but I should have checked before booking. On the down side, the room was very small, with poor use of space. For instance a large pot plant occupied a large window sill which would have been better left empty for our stuff, the shelves beside the beds were too narrow to put anything more than a mobile phone on, there was little space to circumnavigate my side of the bed and there was nowhere in the large bathroom to put toiletries. The restaurant rooms are beautiful with welcoming and efficient staff and we enjoyed our evening meal although my partner’s meal (belly pork) was not very substantial. The included breakfast was excellent and, while it is very nice to have breakfast brought to you, it only works if you don’t have to keep reminding the server of what you want - it may have helped if the server had not relied on her memory. We did appreciate that the hotel was willing for us to leave our car there while we spent the day in Shrewsbury before returning home. I would certainly stay there again but book a bigger room.
