The George Inn

The George Inn at Norton St Philip is over 600 years old, and its history is a large part of its appeal. You stay somewhere like this expecting quirks, uneven floors and the compromises of an ancient building. What you should not have to accept is a room that reeks of damp, and I mean reeks. We booked the Hinton family room at a rack rate of £321 per night for two. They discounted to £231 but only because we asked .The room had a dreadful smell — not a faint mustiness, but an overwhelming smell of damp. The main window was frosted and could not be opened. The only opening window was tiny, perhaps six inches square, facing a courtyard with no noticeable airflow. In my view, this room should not be offered to guests in its present condition. The bathroom looked relatively new, yet there was already black mould along the sealant. The sofa bed intended for children looked ancient and cramped. I feel truly sorry for any family arriving excited about their stay and being shown this foul-smelling room. To be fair to the manageress, she could hardly remedy a serious building problem herself. She offered to refund us if we could find somewhere else, but on a Saturday night that was not a practical option. She did give us a £50 discount, which I appreciated, but it did nothing to make the room tolerable. I genuinely wished I had slept in the car. I would don't book this room again at ANY price I invite the owners of Butcombe Inns to spend a night in the Hinton themselves and decide whether they consider this acceptable accommodation . I also believe the room warrants inspection by the council’s environmental health team. The building’s age explains its quirks. It does not excuse the condition of this room.

A great experience from start to finish. The location of the pub was stunning, the service was first class - very helpful and engaging staff. Our room was extremely comfortable and we were provided with a free lunch box to take with us on our walk around the gorgeous Somerset countryside. I would highly recommend the The George to anyone wanting a unique and welcoming experience in one of the most beautiful locations in Somerset.

A great old inn in a fantastic building. Any negatives about the room (Coach)I knew beforehand and didn't really affect the stay, although I bumped my head several times, but I am 6'2". Staff were great as was the food and we had a great stay.
