This is a lovely hotel.
I stayed while travelling solo for a podcast festival in the city, and the location couldn’t have been more perfect, close to everything.
The building has some history to it, as a technical college, and ‘old’ bits and reminders of its past remain, making it interesting.
My room was really nice. Quite ‘plain’ but in a good way and it reminded me of hotels I have stayed at in Lisbon, etc.
The receptionists were lovely, an asset to the hotel.
I also loved the little fitness room, which I used daily. Although small in size and subterranean, it had everything I needed: weights, a Swiss ball, mats, towels and water. Nice.
It’s noisy on Friday and Saturday nights as the sound rises from the bars and clubs, but the hotel provided earplugs and it was worth it to be so handy for everywhere. Other nights were very peaceful.
The breakfast room was hot and airless and the choices not as great as you might experience in other hotels, but I didn’t go hungry. Possibly getting a second coffee machine would assist the crush round the single machine.
If I go back to Sheffield (I highly recommend the Crossed Wires festival co-organised by Greg James) I will definitely stay here again.

I spent 4 nights in this friendly character hotel. There is a lot to like. It’s centrally located and in easy walking distance of theatres, the Winter Gardens, loads of restaurants and so on. There is a guest lounge and a bar which seemed to be 24-7. Staff are welcoming and helpful. My room was decent size and had desk, chair, TV, quiet and effective A/C and tea and coffee. Comfortable bed. It’s an old building on a nice square with character detail. Each day I was there someone appeared to be working on its upkeep.
Breakfast was buffet style in a small cellar type dining room. It was ok, but I think if there was space upstairs in a nicer room it would transform the experience.
I would definitely consider it if I returned to Sheffield.

Great location but a mediocre hotel that over promises and doesn’t give good value. Room fairly basic. WiFi inadequate for a Zoom call I needed to make. “Luxury toiletries” consisted solely of handwash and shower gel, neither of them in any way luxurious. Only one bedside light worked. No slippers, no robe.
