The Wheatsheaf Inn

This is a charming old pub, brimming with character and overflowing with friendly souls. Fed up with being ripped off by Premier Inn and Travelodges I looked and found the Wheatsheaf in Exning as it looked conveniently placed and easy to find for a one night's stay with breakfast to break up my long and tiring journey. The Whetsheaf is more than a pub, it is a home from home! In the fabric of this historic building can be read a succession of chapters in its history. This really suited me down to the ground. I do like quirky staircases and flowing wall surfaces sculpted by the hand of a long-passed plasterer as he pressed the lime plaster into supporting hazel laths. The décor is clean and honest. The radiator in my room showed its age but kept the room snug and warm. The pillows and the mattress of the double bed were soft and the duvet lovely and warm. There was a wardrobe with hangers for my coat that contained an iron and hair-dryer. There was an electric kettle, two mugs (I hate those time cups some hotels provide), tea, coffee and milk capsules. The en-suite had a shower wc and a wash-hand basin. The latter was smaller than normal hotels but it was more than adequate for washing hand and shaving - for which there was a perfectly positioned mirror. Another thing, the lights were well positioned, the big hotels sometimes get that wrong. The pub closes at 10:00pm. I knew this and was prepared for the noise coming from the pool table room below. I had not however been prepared to enjoy it while I was reading in bed. They played good music (well, to my taste) eg Queen, The Police, Gorillaz and others - great! After 10:00pm the music went off and there was still some chatting from somewhere, outside probably, but not a big deal because I had a good night's sleep. I had asked for an English breakfast for 08:30am and it was cooked freshly for me and it was MASSIVE! I am not good at IT but I hope to attach a photo of the breakfast plate, the 5 toasts are out of view. It was delicious and set me up for the day, quite literally because I didn't feel the need to eat anything else all day, lol! Roxa is the landlady and a very welcoming and warm person, as well as a good cook! I wholeheartedly recommend The Wheatsheaf to anyone and everyone who can appreciate the importance of substance over appearance.

Do not go here, the place was closed down but they still took our money a few weeks earlier, we had to wake the cleaner up just to get our room, all the outside doors were locked. The pub was shut the room was disgusting, we did stay in the room for one night because we didn’t have anywhere else to go, there was no breakfast available because there was nobody around plus the pub was shut, worse place we’ve ever been
